Actor Colin Firth struggled to get into character to play a prisoner of war in new movie The Railway Man because the Australian location for the shoot was "paradise".

The King's Speech star portrays a tortured military officer in the upcoming drama, which also stars Nicole Kidman, but Firth found the intense scenes in Queensland a challenge.

During a press conference, he told reporters in the country, "We are all in love with the Gold Coast. It's hard to get inside the mind of a tortured person (when you are) surrounded by paradise and relaxed and chilled people - it's been bliss. It's hard to go to work and work yourself up into a state of torment when everything here conspires against it.

"This is my first time here and it's been sheer joy - glorious weather, the food has been exceptional and the hospitality has been overwhelming."
