Baz Luhrmann turned his old school in Australia into Jay Gatsby's lavish home in his new movie The Great Gatsby.

The moviemaker took over the Cardinal's Palace at his former Catholic boys school for the ambitious shoot.

He tells WENN, "It was grand enough to look like how F. Scott Fitzgerald describes it; it looked like the Normandy Castle. We called it the Disney for Adults castle."

The director shot the film on location in his native Australia when his plans to make the movie in New York proved "impossible".

He adds, "Australia became an absolute part of the equation and it was a great plus."
