Solange Knowles parents' attempted to stop her from following in the footsteps of elder sister Beyonce overs fears she would miss out on a normal teenage life.

The 27 year old first got a taste of performing on stage in 1998 when she filled in as a back-up dancer for her sister's group Destiny's Child, and Solange was eager to make become a music superstar like her sibling.

However, her parents, Tina and Mathew Knowles, who had been helping with Beyonce's career since she was eight years old, were well aware of how taxing the work would be on a child.

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Solange admits, "My parents constantly tried to talk me out of being an artist. They had gone through the whole journey with my sister and just wanted me to have a normal teenage life."

Her parents eventually gave in, and when Solange was 16, her father, who also served as her manager, helped her sign a record deal.
