What's going on, guys? Welcome into studio. I'm hanging out today with Noah Centineo. How's it going?
Good. How are you?
I'm great. Welcome into studio for the first time ever.
First time ever. There should be a button we don't have one.
Yeah, we need like a ding ding ding ding ding. Yeah. Um we'll have to give you a tour after the interview so you can see everything. That big screen you have back there.
Yes. Yes. Please.
Yeah, we'll put your face on it nice and big for you before you go in.
No. That'd be fun.
Well, you've had the busiest year, I feel like ever. You have so many things going on. Um let's talk about your two films. Sierra Burgess is a Loser.
Loser.
And then um To All the Boys.
Yes.
I've Loved Before. So, tell me about it.
Well, uh Sierra Burgess is a Loser is about a young woman who is empowered and intelligent and then also happens to be overweight, right? And because society tends to define uh beauty by weight, she feels terrified to reveal herself to a boy who she meets over the phone. In the case of like, uh, mistaken identity. You know. Which I think probably happens frequently nowadays with social media and Facebook and high school's so hard. I feel like that's kind of a common a common feeling and vibe now, you know.
Nowadays, absolutely.
Yeah. I mean, it's kind of hard to like pretend to be someone when there was no internet unless you wore a mask. Hannibal Lector. And To All the Boys I Loved Before is uh is about uh a young woman who is is terrified to love because she's had her heart broken in the past. Uh so, whenever a love interest comes into her life instead of exploring that, she kind of pours herself out into the in the form of a love letter. Signs it, seals it, addresses it and then tucks it away. She's never gonna give it to the rest of the world ever again and her younger sister, Kitty's like, "Yo, that's not cool. You don't have a social life. You've never been in love. I'm gonna take these letters that you've written and mail them to all the boys that you've loved before." And I play one of those boys.
One of the five, right?
Yes. One of the five. Yes.
Well, it's crazy because both films are kind of set similarly, you know, they're both in in high school and both in times where the characters are kind of figuring out all about life. Um, talk to me a little bit about like your high school experience. Did you like high school? Did you go to high school? Did you homeschool? Tell me about it.
I went to high school in South Florida uh until halfway through my sophomore year. I moved to California and I I finished my sophomore year here and then I dropped out. And then I did independent studies 'cause my mom was like, "You're gonna finish high school one way or another." They're like, "I'm gonna be an actor." I was like, "Yeah, ma, I just don't I just don't wanna be I wanna be an actor, I don't wanna be in school." But we made it happen. I got my diploma and and so high school was interesting for me because in fact, I got really impacted in eighth grade. I I like underwent my own version of bullying. And when I went into high school it really changed who I was. I was really outgoing in the earlier years of middle school and then by the end of it, I was like, "People suck." I'm just gonna sit in the back of class and like put my hood up and like sleep and not pay attention. And it was more of a survival technique. And then when I got out of high school I was like, "Yo, I don't have to do this anymore." Like, it doesn't matter if people, you know, like me for who I am. I just can be who I am and fortunately for me that was some work and some a lot of luck and I'm sitting with you.
Yeah. You're Young Hollywood over here. What do you think is your biggest advice for loving yourself when you're feeling down like that? Like what got you out of that? Well,
Mentally.
a lot a lot of addressing what it is that hurts. You know, what you avoid controls you. And Sierra Burgess, Shannon Purser, there's the scenes when I feel like she overcomes her insecurities is when she looks directly at them and allows them to pass through her heart. Yeah. She there are moments in this in this film when she just is like broken and vulnerable and that she's like that that bottom layer of mushy, loving human being that we all are. And she she really explodes and it's it's so real and it's so sad. But then once she actually deals with how she feels, she overcomes and then it doesn't matter. She's so much more empowered. So, and she loves herself in a whole new way. So, I I in that way it's it's the exact same for everybody. You know, don't avoid your feelings. Confront them. And what's that quote like you have to get through the rain to get to the rainbow, right? Something like that.
Yeah. Well, thank you so much for hanging out with us and just sharing some fun stories. We'll see you very soon. Come back. Hang out anytime. You're always welcome.
