Kelly Osbourne has cancer gene, praises Angelina Jolie's preventative operation
Kelly Osbourne has revealed she has the same cancer gene as Angelina Jolie, and applauds the Hollywood star for her recent preventative surgery revelation.
The Tomb Raider star has revealed she underwent an operation to remove her ovaries and Fallopian tubes last week (ends22Mar15) after a doctor detected a potential early cancer alert during a routine test earlier this month (Mar15).
The news comes nearly two years after Jolie had a double mastectomy
after discovering she was at high risk of developing cancer, which
runs in her family.
And after Jolie's latest big reveal was published as part of a
piece she wrote in the New York Times on Tuesday (24Mar15),
Osbourne shared her support for the actress as a guest on TV show
The Talk, and revealed she too has the BRCA1 gene, which puts her
at a higher risk for breast and ovarian cancers.
Osbourne, whose mom Sharon battled colon cancer over a decade ago
and underwent a double mastectomy in 2012, said, "I agree with this
100 per cent... I actually do have the cancer gene. My mom made all
of us go and get tested after she found out she had it and got her
double mastectomy.
"One day I know I will have to do it too, because if I have
children, I want to be there to bring them up and support them... I
have been a child of a cancer survivor, so being on that end of it
as well, is really, really hard to deal with.
"I applaud Angelina... because she's bringing attention to this and
now people are going out and getting tested for it."
And Osbourne also revealed that she gets a reminder of her mom's
bravery with the small gold band on her right hand she wears
daily.
She said, "The ring that I'm wearing is because when she was
getting taken into the operation room, she was trying to hide that
she was wearing her diamonds because she didn't want to take them
off.
"The doctor caught her and put them on my finger and it's never
come off since. It's a constant reminder that I have to check
myself."
