Asher Angel on Alternate Ending Writing Process & Music Video

It's Adam and we are in the YH Lounge and the vibes are strong because I am joined by a super talented performer. You loved him in Shazam and Andy Mack. He's back with some great music. The new single is alternate ending and we are about to have a perfect beginning, middle and ending because I'm joined by Asher Angel. Asher, what's up man? How are you doing? So good to see you. Hey, pleasure. The new music. The song says it all, but tell me about the process for you, emotionally putting it all out on the table. How do we feel now that you've given us the world?

Wow, it feels amazing. Uh, I've been living with this music for quite some time now and writing and kind of writing about what I've experienced, what I've gone through. You know, my most previous music was when I was younger, so, you know, the sound has definitely changed a lot, especially from what I experienced in my previous relationship, what I went through, I wanted to put all of that into the music and make my transition to country and kind of starts the new era of music for me. So, I know the fans and everyone's super excited and it's just the beginning.

As an artist, when you go and write the lyrics, is there ever a point where you're like, I'm not sure I want to share this, I'm not sure I want to be so vulnerable. It can be hard.

Yeah, especially for me because like I told you when I was doing music when I was younger, it was never me speaking from like my personal experiences like what I actually went through. It was just like, oh, I'm going to, you know, just putting in these rooms and it's cool, like I loved it. I enjoyed it. I learned a lot from it as well as an artist and as a person, but I wasn't really like using my voice or getting to make the music I wanted to make, you know, and now I'm finally at that point where I get to do that.

What else can we expect? What's the flavor? I know there's more music coming. So, tell me the flavor of the new music.

I'd say it's just true, genuine storytelling. And I think alternate ending is just a piece, it's just one picture piece to the larger puzzle. I think most of the stuff that's coming is still tied into this story and what I've gone through, what I've experienced. So, alternate ending is kind of the the lead way into, you know, the the bigger project coming.

The music video, visually stunning, so beautiful. How was it as a performer to be able to do that and tell the story because I when I was watching and listening, I'm like, this is perfect.

I think for me, it was it was beautiful because it's I've always wanted to collide both of my worlds, the acting world and the music world and like you said before, it is very vulnerable, like putting yourself out there, especially making music uh where I'm vocally talking about things that I've gone through like as a human being, as a person. And like, that's my baby, giving it out there to the world and, you know, it's kind of scary just to see how people reciprocate it. I'm also proud of myself. I am because I've gone through a lot, experienced a lot. Like I said, I know the fans have been waiting forever. So.

The fans, social media, what has the reaction been? Are people saying, I went through this, I know exactly how you feel. What's it been like?

Uh, a lot of good feedback. Yeah, cuz I think a lot of people like, you know, I'm young and it's normal like to go through heartbreak. like a lot of my friends have experienced it and I think it's just something that everyone can relate to.

It's very cathartic to write and to go through the pain and to be able to share it.

100%. Yeah. Because I've I've sat with those songs for a really long time. And I would just think about it all the time. just like, ah, I don't want to put this out to the world. Do I want to, you know, it's scary. But I did it. And here I am and I'm proud of it.

Asher, do you have the notebook next to your bed? Are you that person when you wake up and you start writing down things?

So that person. Yeah. Just cuz it just helps me like then. And I like I always just have like a lot of thoughts and just things that I want to get off my chest in the morning, especially when I wake up. It's like all my thoughts just directly hit me and I'm just like, oh, I got to write some stuff down or I'm going to forget. So, it's therapeutic for me. like it just helps me relieve stress and also like to like stretch in the morning too. But um writing and like just journaling has helped a lot.

For alternate ending, what was the first lyric that was in your mind or in the notes that you

It's probably about like like when I'm talking about doing my clothes feel the same and like staring at the wall because like, you know, in your room, sitting in there by myself, just thinking about everything, reflecting. And that's kind of just actually what I went through. Like in my room, you know, when all I could do is, you know, obviously like think about you and nothing feels the same. Like I don't feel like me.

If you went on tour this year, who would it be an artist that you would love to team up with and be on the road with?

I've been really enjoying Ty Myer's music, would love to hop on his tour and Hudson Westbrook. They've been killing it. So, yeah, I mean, I think we could have a lot of fun together on tour. Stay tuned.
