Young Hollywood

You have good energy.

Hale Appleman

Thanks.

Young Hollywood

And we're going to channel that into a game.

Hale Appleman

Oh gosh.

Young Hollywood

Called Hail yeah or Hail no. So I'm just going to throw out a couple things and you just give me a Hail yeah or a Hail no. This is going to be awesome. Hey guys, it's Audry in the Young Hollywood Studio, joined by a man who is an expert in rocking eyeliner.

Hale Appleman

Yes.

Young Hollywood

This is a true fact.

Hale Appleman

This is this is true. Thank you.

Young Hollywood

Yeah, look at this. I don't do it myself.

Hale Appleman

You don't? No.

Young Hollywood

You should tell people that you do.

Hale Appleman

I do it myself.

Young Hollywood

You're from New York, originally. I feel like people who are born and bred in New York are like just automatically cool. Is that is that how you thought of yourself just on your

Hale Appleman

Thank you. No, I was like a really weird kid, kind of like a weird artsy weirdo and but that that's, you know, you can be that in New York, which I guess is cool by New York standards. My parents were, you know, artsy themselves, so I was lucky to to have that.

Young Hollywood

And you grew up doing theater.

Hale Appleman

Yeah. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Do you do you miss that at all? That kind of live aspect.

Hale Appleman

I do. I miss it a lot. Um, there's nothing like performing live and really getting to work the material for months on end. There's it's just a completely different process. I do my homework before I arrive on set and I think theater really helped prepare me for that.

Young Hollywood

Will you be doing more?

Hale Appleman

Uh, hopefully. Yeah. Knock on floorwood.

Young Hollywood

We were talking earlier. You actually took your first adult vacation.

Hale Appleman

Thank you. Yes.

Young Hollywood

What was that like?

Hale Appleman

I could finally afford it. It was great. I I took the road to Hana in Maui and I drove the twisty roads and had had a real like solo adventure and it was really beautiful.

Young Hollywood

Do you like driving? Like do you like long drives like that for yourself? Cuz it for some people

Hale Appleman

I like adventures, I guess. Okay. So, yeah. I also had like a three-day meditation and time to really just like be

Young Hollywood

Oh. Silent. Three-day meditation. Yeah. Yeah. Like what kind of meditation do you practice?

Hale Appleman

I don't know. Just, you know, just shutting it out. Just shutting it out, you know. Just that that kind.

Young Hollywood

How has it helped you in

Hale Appleman

Um yeah, it really it really balances me and focuses me, especially at yeah, especially at work, you know.

Young Hollywood

When did you start doing this? Um, I'm fascinated. I've tried doing meditation really.

Hale Appleman

Yeah, I guess two years ago. Yeah, you start with like five minutes, you know, in the morning. Wake up.

Young Hollywood

That's hard.

Hale Appleman

It is. It is. Super hard.

Young Hollywood

Do you do it every day?

Hale Appleman

Yeah. The first thing you when you wake up. I mean, I'm not, you know, a total monk about it.

Young Hollywood

I got to say Elliot on The Magicians, your character, has the best wardrobe by far.

Hale Appleman

Magui Jodosky is our brilliant costume designer and she constructs all of the looks for Fillory down from, you know, the the servant in the castle to to Queen Margo, everyone. But she also has a really open dialogue with me about what Elliot's wearing and what each outfit kind of symbolizes for him and we've kind of like tracked his emotional life with each wardrobe item.

Young Hollywood

Do the eyeliner change with the emotions as well?

Hale Appleman

It does. Oh, really? You probably would never know. But

Young Hollywood

Well, now I will pay more attention.

Hale Appleman

There are special occasion eyeliners.

Young Hollywood

I mean, I got to say, he does he's a very sharply dressed man. How fun is it for you to play him? Because he's such a fan favorite now.

Hale Appleman

It's so fun. He's one of the most fascinating and complex characters I've ever played. And when I read I started reading the books, I was auditioning for Penny, actually, and I found Elliot and I thought, oh man, I really hope I get. It's so fun.

Young Hollywood

So it worked out?

Hale Appleman

Yeah, he's just he's layered and complex and

Young Hollywood

How would you describe, I mean, some people call him like kind of like Oscar Wilde-esque, like

Hale Appleman

I think he has a bit of Oscar Wilde, a bit of maybe David Bowie, if I'm being like

Young Hollywood

Okay.

Hale Appleman

You know, I would I would love that. And some of the outfits Magui designed this season are a little reminiscent of Prince. Not that I would necessarily compare him to Prince.

Young Hollywood

It's a it's an edgy show.

Hale Appleman

Yeah.

Young Hollywood

It is super edgy. You guys drop a lot of F bombs.

Hale Appleman

We do.

Young Hollywood

And you I I take it that with a little dip in the

Hale Appleman

Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Yes, I was going to say is that disappointing for you that when you watch the episode in its final form and you're like, man, I gave it my all with that F bomb and then

Hale Appleman

Yeah, sometimes you don't get the like the reading of of the F that you really spent, you know, your week practicing.

Young Hollywood

This show also has a bunch of rapid fans.

Hale Appleman

Oh yeah. Oh my god. They send you artwork.

Young Hollywood

Do you get fan fiction?

Hale Appleman

I get fan fiction. Oh, really? Okay, so what kind of I feel like Elliot is like

Hale Appleman

Please. I don't think I can talk about it. I don't think like legally There's also fan art that like is getting a little graphic sometimes and

Young Hollywood

Okay.

Hale Appleman

Yeah, they like to get in.

Young Hollywood

What do you do with that? Cuz you don't post it.

Hale Appleman

What do I do? I I um I laugh. There's this one person Ze picked. You can look it up. Z_p.

Young Hollywood

Super fans. Super fan. Super fan.

Hale Appleman

New art all the time. Love you if you're watching. Thank you for all of your care and time and hard hard work.

Young Hollywood

On the show, you guys have a great chemistry, you and your castmates. I hope you guys really like each other. Do you actually like each other?

Hale Appleman

Sometimes. No, no, yeah, we do. Um yeah, we're we're lucky that way. We have a we have an incredible crew as well. Yeah, and the cast like we really do get along. We have a good family vibe. We all have different story lines for the most part, so

Young Hollywood

Right.

Hale Appleman

There isn't a whole lot of time that we have to spend together, but when we do, it's good.

Young Hollywood

The show's based on a a book trilogy, which you said that you were reading. So, did you kind of like spoil it for yourself? Or do you think it's been a different enough experience?

Hale Appleman

I think that the show at this point has really created its own path. It definitely comes back to to elements of the books that are essential to to the story. It's its own thing. I think that it's it's definitely earned that at this point. Lev Grossman, the author himself is um, you know, he's given all of us his blessing and that that means more than anything.

Young Hollywood

How often do you get asked if you know magic?

Hale Appleman

Do I know magic? Do I know magic in real life?

Young Hollywood

I wonder if like fans come up to you and are just like, so, show me a magic trick.

Hale Appleman

Someone just asked me if I if I knew card tricks, but I don't at all, really. And that's not the kind of magic that

Young Hollywood

No.

Hale Appleman

we do on the show for the most part. You know, I believe in in certain things that we can't see.

Young Hollywood

You believe in magic.

Hale Appleman

I believe in the power of attraction and the law of attraction and, you know,

Young Hollywood

For sure.

Hale Appleman

energy. I believe in energy.

Young Hollywood

We have good energy. You have good energy.

Hale Appleman

Thanks.

Young Hollywood

And we're going to channel that into a game.

Hale Appleman

Oh gosh.

Young Hollywood

Called Hail yeah or Hail no. Okay. I think it's pretty self-explanatory. So I'm just going to throw out a couple things and you just give me a Hail yeah or a Hail no. This is going to be awesome. Okay. All right. Selfies. Hail yeah or Hail no?

Hale Appleman

Hail no.

Young Hollywood

Why?

Hale Appleman

I don't I hate them. I I don't hate anyone for posting their own selfies. In fact, I'm really impressed. Summer Bishil, who plays my, you know, other half. Beautiful. She is the master at selfies. I I I feel like a hack.

Young Hollywood

It takes a couple tries to get like a good selfie.

Hale Appleman

Yeah, maybe. I guess it's just I don't know. I'd rather like post a photo that someone else took or post a photo of a like pond.

Young Hollywood

Speaking of Instagram, stalking your ex on Instagram. Hail yeah or Hail no?

Hale Appleman

Uh, Hail. I'm like a Hail yeah. Hail sometimes. So yeah. Hail like on the fence.

Young Hollywood

Hail yeah. No, that's a yeah.

Hale Appleman

Hail maybe. Hail maybe. Yeah, there's like a healthy way to do. Actually, there's not a healthy way to do.

Young Hollywood

No, there isn't. There really isn't. Watching yourself on TV.

Hale Appleman

Uh, hail no. No.

Young Hollywood

I've read that you're actually not really into it.

Hale Appleman

It makes me a little queasy. And sometimes it's fine. And I don't throw up. Oh, dear. It's not you know, it's like a weird thing. It's also it's like how do you have that, you know, distance from you versus the character you're playing. But I think sometimes like total objectivity is um is impossible. So Hail Hail Hail no. Hail no. Sometimes it's okay. Hail no.

Young Hollywood

Um, last one, believing in magic.

Hale Appleman

Hail yes. Hail yeah. Yeah. I believe in magic.

Young Hollywood

We need some. We do. So, we might as well. This interview was magical. Hey, is that it? Oh man. This is so fun. Can I Can I just

Hale Appleman

Oh, yes, please, please. You can have both of them. I'm I'm feeling generous today. Thank you.

Young Hollywood

Okay.
