Young Hollywood

Hey guys, Erica Ross here with Young Hollywood. Today we are with skateboard. Time out. We are with Nyjah Huston, Pro Skateboarder. We are talking all things skateboarding. Oh, look at that. And uh I'm ready to go because I got my protection. Ready, Nyjah? Ready. Okay, okay, okay. That time. They going on your own. All right, Nyjah. Can you explain to us exactly what responsibilities a battle commander has?

Nyjah Huston

Uh battle commander uh requires a lot of work and a lot of sweat because the barracks is very hot. Um but uh pretty much you gotta go in there and try to figure out different tricks that uh people haven't already done, especially uh after so many people have already skated that specific park. So um it's it's a little bit of a challenge, but uh it's fun.

Young Hollywood

Well, speaking of tricks, you have the highest scoring trick on street league. Congratulations.

Nyjah Huston

Thank you.

Young Hollywood

Very exciting. Not to mention, you are now sitting 1. 4 million pretty off of street league. So what have you been investing in?

Nyjah Huston

Cars. Okay. I uh haven't bought my own house yet because I'm not even 18 yet. So I decided to do a one-year lease first, which I just moved down in Huntington.

Young Hollywood

Okay.

Nyjah Huston

Which I'm really stoked about. It's really fun living on my own thanks to my mom for uh letting me have that opportunity. What a brave woman, huh? And uh yeah, I'll probably uh start working on uh buying my own house next year. That'd be a good investment and yeah.

Young Hollywood

So you recently became sponsored by DC?

Nyjah Huston

Yes.

Young Hollywood

Tell us about that.

Nyjah Huston

DC shoes. Having the opportunity to be sponsored by them was a dream come true. It was honestly my uh my first pick for a shoe company um over any other companies. Um I actually didn't have a shoe sponsor for a while, so uh it was definitely a dream come true and I'm so happy to be on that team, be able to travel with all those guys and it's awesome. DC.

Young Hollywood

Hey. Right there. Hey. Now you were, you won Street League the first year and now you just won it this year. What is the difference between winning it for the first time versus the second time?

Nyjah Huston

Um winning it for the first time was uh was definitely the best contest. I guess I don't it's really hard to say because this last contest when I want to say that was my best contest win ever. But then the first Street League ever in 2010 in Arizona felt so awesome too because that was right after I got so many second places in the past. So to finally uh be able to get a good first place uh right at that time when I was 15 was an awesome feeling. But then this last championship in New Jersey was insane because it was such a close contest. Yeah. So close. Um I almost blew it for myself and I really gave P Rod a good chance to be able to uh land his trick. So it was a very nervous feeling where I had to sit there and wait.

Young Hollywood

Now I hear that you and Lil Wayne have a little bit of like a bromance. He invited you to the VMA after party with him.

Nyjah Huston

Yeah, yeah, Lil did. Um yeah, Lil Wayne is really stoked on the whole skateboarding scene, which I personally think is awesome. And I guess uh he said in a couple of interviews before that I'm his favorite skater. So that

Young Hollywood

Look at that. That's a that's a privilege thing to hear. It really is. I saw um a picture of you guys with that big old check.

Nyjah Huston

Yeah, that was really cool. Yeah, he always comes out to the street leagues, which I think is awesome. Uh I know a lot of people tend to hate on it, but I think it's cool that uh seeing someone so big uh coming to skateboarding and only helping the sport grow, you know, I think it's awesome. And he actually is trying to learn how to skateboard himself. So it's not you can't call him a poser, he's actually trying to learn. So

Young Hollywood

Absolutely. And now you did uh your Element video Rise and Shine last year.

Nyjah Huston

Yes.

Young Hollywood

And you did a 24-stair handrail?

Nyjah Huston

Yes. That took a lot of uh fear to get by to try that one. But um I actually it was the hardest part about it was I got myself to try it, but on my very first try, I ate so much. And uh so that was really unfortunate. It was really hard to get back up and get myself to try it again.

Young Hollywood

Right.

Nyjah Huston

But it ended up working out and uh I'm actually

Young Hollywood

So you did it in the same day?

Nyjah Huston

Yes, same day. You never wanna have to come back after taking a fall like that because it's so hard to get yourself to go back cuz you're like, what if the same thing happens again, you know?

Young Hollywood

Absolutely. All right, Nyjah. Before we let you go, we're gonna have you teach one of our crew guys, Brian, a little tutorial on how to skate. Fair enough?

Nyjah Huston

Sounds good.

Young Hollywood

Yeah, let's do it. Cuz I'm not qualified, so I'm gonna I'm gonna pass it over to Brian.

Nyjah Huston

Yeah, yeah, I think it'll be a lot better with Brian.

Young Hollywood

Hey. All right, Nyjah, you're gonna take us through how to Ollie.

Nyjah Huston

Okay, so the process of learning how to Ollie it's pretty simple. Um All you pretty much do is put your feet in the right spot. Back foot right here, kinda hanging off the edge a little bit. Front foot right below the bolt and then just snap off the front, kinda push forward. Then snap off the back, kinda push forward on the front, right when you pop. Then just lift up like that. Just I I honestly don't even know how the board sticks to your feet, but somehow it just sticks to your feet. So. It's very simple.

Young Hollywood

Let me try. Got it. Let's do this. I don't know about that one. See, almost got it. Bum, there it is. That's Ollie. Now if you can land that Ollie, you can take that to rails and ledges and whatnot and then there you go. Brian's learning. Yay. What? Oh, look at that. Woo! Nice. This is Nyjah Huston, you're watching Young Hollywood.
