Welcome to Young Hollywood. What's up guys? Leslie Robbins here for Young Hollywood coming to you from UCLA where I've got two big names for you, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi. These tennis legends are hitting the court to kick off the LA Tennis Open. Let's get things started.
The last time you played Agassi, 1992 Wimbledon, he beat you in straight sets. What's your strategy for today?
Oh, I think that's very, I'm very upset that you even brought that up. But hopefully I can do a little bit better. Uh, but he, he's a great, great player. I just hope I make it look good.
Well, you look good. What else are you doing besides tennis to stay in shape?
I do a lot of things. You know, I love to work out and hopefully that will help me tonight because Lord knows I need it.
Your charity has a huge involvement with this tournament. Tell me about that.
Well, it's been a long history of me playing down here and being supported both personally and and as it relates to my foundation, uh, by Bob Kramer and and all the sponsors of this event over the years. So, uh, to be back here now brings back a lot of good memories on the court, but it also partners with with this tournament in a way that I think makes the the greatest impact, which is education, affecting kids that don't have those options in their life.
Now, speaking of kids, do you get your kids out on the tennis court and when you and Steffie get out there, who's winning?
Uh, no, my daughter plays about three times a week. She enjoys it, treats it as fun, which I love to see. My son is totally into baseball and uh, Steffy and I just get out there for a workout. We don't really compete anymore.
So the last time you won a singles match here, it was 2000. How'd it feel to be back?
Oh, it's been great. Uh, you know, like I said, this is such a special event for me. This is where I grew up playing tennis. And um, you know, it's uh, it's great always to play in front of family and friends.
What'd you think about your partner out there?
Oh, he's great. Boy, he hit some great serves today. Um, you know, he was saying, you know, I'm we're comfortable with the guitar. I said you're comfortable with the tennis racket, you know. So, uh, you know, Gavin played great and uh, we had a lot of fun out there.
John Lovitz is a comedian on and off the court.
Yeah, he was a, he was great out there and uh, kept everyone, you know, laughing and entertained and um, you know, he hit some good shots as well. So, uh, it was a, it was a fun night.
So you're a rock star and a phenomenal tennis player. How'd you get into the sport?
Um, well, it's just a great way to spend every morning. It's a great thing to do, you know, uh, I love it and these things are real hard. You know, I I can play these crowds with a guitar, but playing with a tennis racket, it's like it's a little bit daunting, you know.
What about Gwen and the kids? You got rackets in their hands yet?
Not so much Gwen, a little bit of the kids for sure.
So, how'd you get involved in this tournament?
Well, I'm from here, so they they, you know, they asked me to do it and I I like playing tennis. It's fun. But you know, I'm playing with the top guys, so they they they take it easy on you, you know, but it's fun to do. So they hit some good shots, it's it's thrilling, you know.
You got the comedian against the rock star.
Well, Gaman, he hasn't been playing long as me, but he's been but he's been playing like every day for years now, so he's his game's gone way up. So he's really good. And he's a nice guy and I play with him in other charity tournaments, so we're friends. We both want to win though. We go, it's for charity. But we want to win. But you you don't win. It's up to the pros. They take it easy on us guys. Believe me, if they played full out, we would never touch the ball. It's just. But it it's just fun to be out there with them.
If you were a betting man, Agassi or McEnroe, who would it be?
I don't know. They're both great. It's gonna be thrilling to watch. Wouldn't want to pick. They're both that John's that great and Andre's great, you know. And Andre's younger but they used to play each other but but John's, you know, like, well, they're both amazing. So, I wouldn't want to pick.
