I heard a fan tattooed a lyric of one of your songs and it was the wrong lyric. Which lyric was it? Young the Giant: We're not going to specify because I'd feel so bad. Like tattoos are expensive and they hurt and like if it mean if that's what it means to her enough that she would get it tattooed on her skin then, you know, why why mess up her her thing? Yeah. Her dream. Yeah.
Hey everyone. Nikki Novak here at the historic Hollywood Tower. We may be Young Hollywood but they're Young the Giant. I should have found by now. I'm waiting for this call. We're here in the Hollywood Tower which you told me when we walked in that this place is haunted. Young the Giant: The guy who's running the whole thing with uh 98. 7 was he lives here and he was telling me all these really terrifying stories. And apparently he brought like a medium in and this room and his bedroom are like the specific rooms on this floor that are apparently haunted by two separate ghosts.
So you guys have been touring like crazy with Incubus. How did that go? Young the Giant: This is our first tour with the bus.
So what does your bus tend to be like? Is it chaos? Is it neat? Are you neat freaks? Is there like who's the messy one? Young the Giant: We're not neat at all. I mean we were in college before we started doing this and we kind of like semi dropped out of college to do this. So we were used to living in like big houses with a bunch of stinky dudes who never clean up after themselves.
Who's the stinky-est? Young the Giant: The stinky-est has got to be Pay. He's very hairy. Yeah. He's very hairy.
So nobody is hair challenged in this band, I've noticed. And tats, I know you have a cool tat. Can I ask Can I see it? So what is it? Young the Giant: It's a fixed gear wheel. No. It's uh it's the chakra on the Indian flag.
I heard a fan tattooed a lyric of one of your songs and it was the wrong lyric. Which lyric was it? Young the Giant: We're not going to specify because I don't want her or him to ever find out. I'd feel so bad. Like tattoos are expensive and they hurt and like if it mean if that's what it means to her, if if whatever that lyric, you know, meant something to her enough that she would get it tattooed on her skin then you know, why why mess up her, you know her thing? Her dream. Yeah.
And I saw you at the VMAs which a lot of people I think when they watched the VMAs were like who are these guys? Like it kind of like catapulted you to another level. Young the Giant: We knew that we were like up for it. We were against a couple other acts and you know there was like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters. Like ah we're we're not going to get it but it was cool that we were nominated. And then we got it. We were just so elated. It was absolutely surreal that we were the only rock act.
So Mr. Brave Samir that threw his body out into the audience at the VMAs. Was that planned or did you just like get in the moment and get crazy?
I mean I think they were warned that I might do it because when I'm actually on the road I I never really tell people when I do it. I'll just jump out.
Has that ever backfired?
Yes. We were in Orlando and we're playing the Beachum Theater and it was just nuts. And at the end of my body I jumped off. And I jumped into a group of girls. Like young girls and they just so scared. They just like moved away and my head I like I think hit the ground but I was an adrenaline rush so I'm not quite sure. But someone grabbed me right by the neck before I could really do any full damage.
I like your song titles like Cough Syrup, Guns Out, My Body. Young the Giant: Most of the time they're just the titles that we attach to the songs while we're writing them so that we can get say like, all right, well let's just go back to that. We're always thinking the terrible names and then we'll go back and change them and make them something that, you know like transcends music and life and all that stuff. By the end of it it's like, ah this let's just call these this.
So you recorded your album pretty much live which most bands don't do these days. Young the Giant: When we had talked about what we wanted to achieve with the record it was a lot of it was kind of like trying to capture that live show and put it in record form. There's just something so daunting about it, you know, and it's we were fortunate enough that we there was such a like steep learning curve and we we knew we had to do well so we were able to kind of you know make the best of it. Um and in the end it turned out really well and we were able to capture kind of a groove that's very difficult to capture when you're doing individual tracking.
I always want Fran to be one of those like really like fancy drummers that like spins their sticks around and stuff. I wish he didn't suck so bad.
You just call him Fran? I was so good calling you Francois.
My brothers actually were the ones who who started calling me Fran. A lot of people just call me like Francois or like cuz it's written F R A N C O I S. So it's Francois or Franzo or like Francis.
I'm Samir.
I'm Francois.
And we're Young the Giant.
And you're watching Young Hollywood.
