Young Hollywood

Hey, guys. Tatiana Diana here hanging out with Andrew McMahon in your rehearsal space.

Andrew McMahon

Yes, here we are.

Young Hollywood

So, it's kind of quiet right now, but take me through a typical day of rehearsal leading up to a big show like the Dear Jack Foundation we're getting ready for.

Andrew McMahon

Yeah, uh, you know, it's what, I think we're looking at about 2:00 in the afternoon, so everybody's rolling in here slowly but surely and uh kind of got the piano set up this morning and get the rest of the gear set up and we've got a kind of a special situation 'cause I'm playing with both uh both the bands I've played with over the years here, Jack's Mannequin and Something Corporate. So, uh, so yeah, today was kind of a Something Corporate day. We'll pick back up with those guys in the morning and then the uh the Jack's guys show up tomorrow afternoon and we uh we sort of finish out tomorrow night.

Andrew McMahon

Mississippi underneath, I've never been so lost. I've never felt so much at home. These white marble floors will rub away my keys. I woke up in a car.

Young Hollywood

So for people who are getting confused, he's a part of two bands. Yes. 'Cause one just isn't enough. Right? You know what I mean?

Andrew McMahon

Uh you know, yeah, uh Something Corporate is kind of the band that I started started playing music with back when I was still in high school down in Orange County. Uh and, you know, we we sort of have been on hiatus for quite some time, but got back together to do a little uh reunion tour this summer. And um as we were putting together the foundation show, uh decided that that we've kind of do a night where both bands, Jack's Mannequin who I who I play with now and Something Corporate who I played with over the years uh back a few years ago, I should say, uh are going to get together in one night and play a show together.

Young Hollywood

Is there ever a battle of the bands for Andrew?

Andrew McMahon

No, no, no, no, no, no, it's all love. We're actually uh we're all we're all lucky to kind of get a play one together and um really it's a night dedicated to raising money for uh for the Dear Jack Foundation, which uh it raises dough for uh young adult cancer. And um yeah, I I think in that sense it's just going to be good friends on a stage uh sharing the space and and hanging out with our fans for tonight.

Young Hollywood

So how'd you get involved with this foundation?

Andrew McMahon

I was recovering from a from my battle with leukemia at the time. And we decided that we would try and uh sort of take my experience and the fact that obviously I did have a a group of people who who listened to my music and and who were very supportive of me when I was ill. Um see if we couldn't parlay that into raising some awareness and raising some dollars for uh for research.

Young Hollywood

For your upcoming album, are there any artists out there right now that you just would love to work with that you have noticed coming up throughout the years?

Andrew McMahon

I mean, there are a lot of great bands that I've been listening to. I think for this record itself, you know, we all almost went insular where I've had a had kind of like a, you know, on early Jack's records, we had Tommy Lee playing the drums on on the first Jack's record and and we're, you know, I sort of made a point to reach out to other artists. It's actually, you know, we really focused this one and it's it's been the uh the the band that I've been touring with over the uh the past five years in Jack's Mannequin. Uh they kind of have been the guys that have joined me in the studio and we've been working on this together.

Young Hollywood

Where do you find yourself most creative? Is it somewhere like here in a very set up environment or is it somewhere like Joshua Tree just hanging out, figuring out what's going to come next?

Andrew McMahon

It it can change. I mean, for this record, there was uh uh you know, I sort of had this this uh this energy towards getting back to back to the water. I sort of grew up or at least uh, you know, from high school on I was down at Dana Point in Orange County. And and uh, you know, I found myself very connected to the ocean and and and very creative in that space.

Andrew McMahon

here I am. Well, I woke up in a car.

Young Hollywood

So before we go, I might be pushing it with you being all busy and such. Okay. I would love to learn to play a little piano.

Andrew McMahon

Okay. I think we can like I'm Andrew. Yeah, uh, I think like uh we could do "Dark Blue." "Dark Blue" is a pretty uh pretty easy part.

Young Hollywood

All right, you got it. You're You're not, yeah, it was my fault. Yeah, of course. So you're right you're almost there. Ready? So it is So it's top. Oh. So on top. You got it. I'm ready for tour.

Andrew McMahon

You're ready, you're ready.

Young Hollywood

Yeah, are we going to Can I come?

Andrew McMahon

Yeah, yeah, sure.

Young Hollywood

Are you going to finish it though? You got to I mean now you got to you got to you got to do the whole

Andrew McMahon

She's already trying to leave.

Young Hollywood

What do I mean what I'm I'm like that. I'm a diva. Come on now. Come on now. I do it and I go. I'm pretending I'm doing it.

Andrew McMahon

I think that might be as far as we're going to get.

Young Hollywood

Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down and talk with us. We can't wait for everything in the future.
