Welcome to Younghollywood. com. We're here with, I mean, Dashboard Confessional. Chris invited us on the tour bus. Are you doing acoustic tonight?

Chris

I am.

Young Hollywood

I saw you already hugging some of your fans in line.

Chris

Yeah, I know some of those some of these.

Young Hollywood

You know them or you just recognize them because they come to every show?

Chris

Yeah, well, that little of that and then you get to know them on the the Twitter and then sometimes they buy you a drink afterwards and then you buy them a couple of drinks afterwards and then

Young Hollywood

I need to be coming to more of your shows. drinks? I didn't know that drinks were included.

Chris

We play bars. So, yeah. And encouraged. Don't turn away. Dry your eyes. Dry your eyes. Don't be afraid. We'll keep it all inside. All inside. When you fall apart. Dry your eyes. Dry your eyes. Life is always hard for the belle of the boulevard.

Young Hollywood

I love your video, "Belle of the Boulevard." I just love the title. I love the little girl you use in the video. Where did you guys come up with the concept?

Chris

Usually, I like to have a hand in in what the story will be within the videos. I felt like the song is such a specific narrative that I told the story as completely as I was going to be able to. But I didn't want it to be a shot for shot rendition of the story I was telling. Joey Lauren Adams is a an actress you may know. She's also a phenomenal director, as it turns out. She sent me a picture that she had of a similar looking little girl with a with some trubidor playing in the not, no pun intended, playing in the, which is where we're at, trubidor. Anyway, with the uh playing playing guitar and she was spinning around and that was the impetus for this whole story in her mind. She sent me the photograph and it was kind of it. I was like, I'm in. Whatever it is, let's you've got the aesthetic. Let's go. Let's do it. She's genius. We did three videos in two days. Really? With her? Different songs with her. And all very different. Different songs, different uh stories, different aesthetics, all in the same location but they don't feel like they're in the same location, you know. We alter the ending.

Young Hollywood

How many total songs did you write? How many did you throw out?

Chris

Oh, wow. I, you know what? I I wrote, I threw out albums worth of songs. And it's it's a terrible thing to phrase it that way, throwing it out, but they just didn't make the cut. They didn't feel right. I was in this constant search of the last song. You know, the last piece of the puzzle that wraps it all up. But you know, you keep you're chasing the last thing and it takes you more than one to get there. But suddenly you've got like five that you're like, whoa, I like these five now. Maybe they're part of the puzzle and the other ones got to go. So, before you know it, you've um I don't know, you've you've had it all figured out and lost the plot three or four times and um in the end, it's um it's clear. On the way, it's absolutely unclear.

Young Hollywood

What would you be doing if it wasn't music? I know that it was like in like in you. It was something that you had to do. But was there any any other occupation that you thought that maybe you would be fitted for?

Chris

Well, I was on my, I was in I was a teacher for a hot minute. I was

Young Hollywood

You were.

Chris

I was a preschool teacher. And I ran an after-school program for uh K through five. It was very glamorous.

Young Hollywood

Did you sing them songs, I hope?

Chris

I did write several songs sitting in my office when I was supposed to be like on the playground playing dodgeball.

Young Hollywood

Do you believe in the law of attraction? Because I know that you um would do simulated interviews with your brother at a young age about after the show.

Chris

Yes. I, I mean, we were goofy. We we had this like weird thing where we thought like people grew up to be rock stars. So, we were like, oh, let's play rock star. And like we would conduct these fake interviews of as if we were writers or performers for Rolling Stone. And I don't know where we got this the impression that this happened except for it was the only it was the one magazine subscription that we had in the house. So, we it was the only magazine we read. So, we're like this is this is what adult life is cuz we only see adults doing this whatever this magazine says they do. Yeah. Which is, you know, galavant shirtless and and um and sing rock songs and so on. Hey, Young Hollywood. This is it. I got to split cuz I got a show to play. So, that means uh I'll have to come back and visit you another time. I don't know. I'll see you soon.
