"Nice Guys" Video = We Are Scientists
About this video
We had an awesome chat with Chris Cain and Keith Murray of We Are Scientists at the L.A. Troubadour. These funny guys cracked us up talking about the non-existant woman their album, "Barbara," is named after, making their own subtitled music videos, and the importance of appreciating animals. Hosted by Lesley Robins.

Welcome to younghollywood. com. What's up, guys? Leslie Robbins here for Young Hollywood. I'm hanging out with Chris and Keith of We Are Scientists. We're at the LA Troubadour. Let's talk about your album, named Barbara. I have to ask, who is Barbara?
Okay, who is in part these days? You named an album after a woman, yet she doesn't exist.
Mhm.
Mhm. Correct.
I wanted more than you. I wanted more than you. This isn't a dream. Just stop overthinking everything. This isn't a dream. Stop overthinking everything. If you're the nice guy, act like the nice guy. If you're the nice guy, act like the nice guy. If you're the nice guy, act like the nice guy.
So, you guys are an American band, but you're huge in the UK. You have your MTV UK show, Steve Wants His Money. Are we going to be seeing more of that? They love you over there.
People love us over there in greater, um, quantities. So, you know, is it a, Is it a fiercer love? Not necessarily, but yeah, it was, yeah, definitely there's more of it. It's more widespread.
So, you guys create your own music videos. Where do you come up with this stuff?
Um, I, I mean, I think the key to our video concepts and pure desperation that usually, it usually devised mere minutes before filming actually begins. Um, they often just involved looking around and seeing what props we have on hand. Um, and so, for the next guy's video we had a scooter and some shoes. Put them two together. Got the idea. Had a mutant bastard hanging out.
There are some closeups of some animals. We have some squirrels, little creatures running around. There's a theme going on here. What's with the animals?
Um, for people to pretend, for people like, uh, oh, what's it? I mean, The Strokes to pretend that animals don't exist in their music videos is the height of hypocrisy. Where would The Strokes, where would The Strokes be without animal kind? For one thing, you know, if you look at the chain of evolution in high school biology, you see that we once were animals. Um, so for us to not include at least, you know, some crawling around creatures and some squirrels in our, in our video, well, that seems, uh, you know, We'd be ingrates, at the very least. The worst would be liars, charlatans.
And then where did the idea for the subtitles come about?
Um, Chris has never been able to understand a single word in any of the, um, We Are Scientists tunes. Um, and so, you know, it was sort of that was his desperate attempt to, um, attain clarity. Fortunately, it didn't help him decipher the lyrics, so having the man who himself can't understand them create the subtitles for himself is a feedback loop.
Give me just a crazy story from being out on the road.
Let's see. Our this is not about, this didn't happen to us, but We just heard an amazing story about our former drummer, Adam. Uh, he was on tour with The Thrill Kill Kult in Salt Lake City. My life with The Thrill Kill Kult. Um, and this this was just last week. And he got on the bus and a a sort of creepy fan had made his way onto the bus looking for the lead singer. And the unwelcomed nature of the visit had had, um, sort of spurred a a physical conflict that the band and this guy were starting to tussle. And right as Adam got onto the bus, um, the dude pulled out a gun. It's a true story. And Adam punched the dude in the face, causing him to drop the gun. Uh, and then the cops came and took the guy away to jail, and Adam busted his hand. He has a huge cast on. He'll be here tonight. You can see. He'll verify the story.
Thanks, Thanks, Leslie, and and Young Hollywood.
