Phantogram

There was a crazy fan that roofied Josh the other night. We had to literally punch him to wake him up.

Phantogram

In the face.

Phantogram

In the face.

Phantogram

No.

Phantogram

Yeah. I'm wearing a lot of makeup right now to cover up the bruises. No, all the bruises.

Young Hollywood

What's up guys? Nicki Novak here for Young Hollywood at the Music Box theater where we're going to have a little chat with Fantogram. I saw an interview where you guys said, now this was a couple of years ago, where you guys said that on tour you were sleeping in your car, eating tuna fish sandwiches and you were hoping to up it to like a peanut butter and jam. Well, are those days behind you?

Phantogram

Yes, they are. But luckily, we have very good taste in food, so we always make sure that we have peanut butter and jelly on our hospitality rider.

Young Hollywood

How would you describe yourselves seeing as you're so sort of indefinable?

Phantogram

Uh, I'd say it's just like beat heavy music with psychedelic elements, like droning guitars and scents and a lot of emotion.

Young Hollywood

Can I throw a word out there?

Phantogram

Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Sexy. Your music is sexy. Cuz your voice is so haunting and then with the beats and everything. It's just, yeah. Sexy. So if you ever need to get in the mood.

Phantogram

We're here.

Young Hollywood

I heard something about writing in a barn. Is that true?

Phantogram

Yeah. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

With animals?

Phantogram

No. No.

Young Hollywood

So you do have running water in. There, well, there isn't any running water in the barn, so we have to go to the house. That provides an urgency to your songs, getting them done. Hurry, I got to lay down this track. I gotta pee.

Phantogram

Show me love. If I got you on the button now.

Young Hollywood

You're playing so many instruments. Has it become challenging when you're performing live?

Phantogram

We make sure we can do it live before we like record it. We've definitely had songs in the past that we wrote and um just kept adding all these cool layers and instruments like, this is just not going to happen live.

Young Hollywood

So when you're writing together, because there's only two of you, do you generally get along? You've known each other for so long.

Phantogram

Yeah. It's kind of creepy that we um how well we get along and for how long we've known each other. We have a lot of respect for each other, so. Yeah. One another, so.

Young Hollywood

Well, that's I think that's an East Coast thing too. I mean, I heard you said you're maybe thinking of moving to LA. You got to get a little tougher, a little meaner.

Phantogram

Yeah, I'm a little nervous.

Young Hollywood

You're going to have to. Okay, let me give you the mean look. Right. Can you do it? Intimidating. Can you do it?

Phantogram

I can't. I'm like. I'm sorry. Want to be my friend?

Phantogram

Show me love.

Young Hollywood

Is that crazy tour stories or crazy fans?

Phantogram

Yeah, there was a crazy fan that roofied Josh the other night.

Young Hollywood

What?

Phantogram

We had to literally punch him to wake him up about four times that night cuz he's in the face.

Phantogram

In the face.

Phantogram

No.

Phantogram

Yes. I'm wearing a lot of makeup right now to cover up the bruises. No, all the bruises. This is Josh had a beard, he was telling me. He had a beard and this guy uh gave him this lighter that had all these um sexual positions and um fish members of the band like in there too. Trey Anastasio was in there. It still has it. And then there's a and then there's a there's a it says "Just one drink?" question mark. gave it to Josh. So we think that was the guy.

Young Hollywood

I think that qualifies as the all time craziest fan story I have ever heard.

Phantogram

Yeah, creepy. Creepy, creepy.

Young Hollywood

Your song was on an episode of Mob Wives.

Phantogram

Our other a couple other um songs have been on CSI. It did have a song on Jersey Shore, but I can't.

Young Hollywood

Jersey Shore. Teen Wolf. That's major bragging rights. I mean, once you've been on Jersey Shore, you can pretty much retire.

Phantogram

I've lived. I'm done. What else is there to do? What more is there in life?

Young Hollywood

Well, thank you so much for chatting with us.

Phantogram

Yeah, thank you.

Young Hollywood

Best wishes. Hopefully you'll never have to sleep in your car again, but I have a feeling you won't have to.

Phantogram

Only if we want to.
