Mickey Novak here for Young Hollywood in Los Angeles. Come inside Neil Lane Jewelry Boutique. We're going to talk to the celebrity jewelry designer himself and hopefully by the end of this segment, I'm going to be dripping in diamonds. Hello.
Hello. Neil Lane here in Hollywood, not London, but Hollywood. Uh, and we're going to talk about accents. Jewelry. Jewelry. And And Glamour.
First of all, I know you didn't start out, you didn't plan on being a jewelry designer. How did this all sort of come about?
Well, if you would have asked me all those years ago, all those years ago in Brooklyn, New York, that one day you'd be juling and designing jewels for some of the most beautiful women, most famous women and actresses, talented people in the world. I would say you are crazy. It's not what I want to do. I want to be an artist. But you know, life's journey, it takes you many may different places and I ended up in Hollywood 20 some odd years ago. I didn't plan it. Um, I started a little little counter of jewelry and when I first came here, I knew it was Hollywood, but there wasn't the glamour that we have here today. The past, golden age of Hollywood, glamour. It was a memory. Just started happening in like late 1990s, young girls, Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon, they just started coming up and they started having glamour and I started juling them and designing their rings or engagement rings and one thing led to another and then there was more red carpets and I sort of grew up and I became part of the fabric of Hollywood.
What would you sort of say your aesthetic is? What is the Neil Lane aesthetic?
I think it's glamorous. I I think of jewels as glamorous things. I think of them as sparkle. You see these old movies from the 20s and 30s on TV or in the movies and they're amazing. So you sort of mix it up a little bit, a little rock and roll, a little modern-day Hollywood and you start you get a look.
Well, for example, like Miley Cyrus, you designed her engagement ring. So there's there's an aesthetic of she's a young cool girl, but her ring was very in a sense, very classic. How do you sort of meld and make sure everybody's happy that it's the Neil Lane aesthetic, but it's also personal to her?
Firstly, we jeweled Miley when she was like 15, when the first time she went to the Oscars. And we we glamored her up, like so that was a good beginning. When it came for her engagement ring, we had to think about something really cool, different, youthful, working with Liam, he's amazing, you know, he had an idea and I had an idea and came together and she loves her rings. Guys, you need to go with your girlfriend. Go shopping with your girlfriend. Do you know you want to? Stay with her. Listen to what she's saying.
Let's go on to some of your favorite looks. These are you've sort of pulled some of your favorite red carpet.
What you have here is really glamour. Glamour today is mixed up, shook up, rose, platinum, diamonds, layers. It could be a cross. Gwen Stefani just wore this to the AMAs. She laid it. Blond hair, red lips, jewels, pearls and diamonds and cross, amazing. Right. This is strictly glamour for Sophia Vergara. This was she wore this all to the Emmys.
All to the Emmys. Okay.
We made these earrings longer.
Oh, you did? Yeah, okay.
We made them longer. Once you saw the whole look, you decided it had to be a little bit. A little bit longer. Like, you know, a couple of millimeters and then girls see that. Angelina Jolie, last year at the Oscars. These were her earrings. Yeah. It was an amazing look. It was the velvet leg look.
Oh, the leg. The velvet. I mean, yeah.
So glamorous. Just big rocks. One ring. That was it. That was so glamorous. Uh, Jennifer Hudson, I've been working with her since like day one before she was well known with Dream Girls, we jeweled her the whole uh season and she became a loyal friend, client. You know, we've done so many amazing red carpets with her when she won her Oscar, uh when she did the tribute to uh Whitney. So going from that to now this. We're going from really like glitter, glamour, sparkle, tons of carrots, hundreds of carats of diamonds to something like so simple and cool as gold. We hammered these earrings for Fergie. We were working with her for the Grammy's last year. We took about three days. We handmade them. She wanted something giant. She had this orange cool dress on see through. Uh I love that dress. And just that, a big gold cuff. Rihanna. That was amazing one, too.
This is my look. I love this. This is I'm the funky. I love the funky jewelry and I remember this look.
Yeah, but she was funky maybe with jewelry, but that dress, that black stylish dress was amazing. She loves serpents. So that was kind of cool wrapped around. Of course, you had to have, you know, the classic big diamond studs. And then she just had a gaggle of rings.
Speaking of which, is there anything that I can try on because
You can try everything on.
Really? It's heavy. It feels like it feels like what it's probably worth. Can I ask how much this?
There probably a half a million dollars or more of diamond bracelets there.
Which is why we have a security guard eyeing me very carefully behind the camera. But it's not necessarily about the value, but it's really about the beauty. And how it makes you feel when you're wearing it because I'm suddenly getting very verlempt. Verlempt. Oh, Barbara Streisand. We worked with her too. Now what would this, okay, cuz I know like if you're dressing for the Grammy's versus the Golden Globes versus the Oscars, you want sort of Oscar's are obviously a little more formal.
Oscar's, I mean, they're all big today. You can't say one's bigger than the other.
But if you had to choose I can. I really wasn't trying to steal it. I guess if you have to choose one, it's the Oscars.
The people really, really want to doll themselves up and lots of jewels go out. These Octavia Spencer wore to the Oscars. She loved them. They were glamorous, they. She won the Oscar in these. So these are cute. These are up to touch. Good luck.
Yeah. You're showing me this gorgeous jewelry that all these celebrities have worn, but now you're also designing lines for Kays. So what sort of inspired you to do that? And sort of where did that where did that all come from?
Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to share. You know, I was drawing, I found something interesting, a piece of colored glass. I would show my mom. I'd run around and show the neighbor. I was so excited about sharing these things. And you see everybody wants a piece of Hollywood. Everybody wants some of that fairy dust. And I never knew how to bring it. And my relationship with Kay is amazing. They're amazing company. They have all these stores and they believe in me, and believe in my designs and I'm able to take all that inspiration and create jewels and designs for a larger audience. And for me, that's amazing. You know, to make girls happy, guys happy is they can buy beautiful gifts to their girlfriends. Uh, you know, for me it's full circle now. I think it's about sharing the magic.
I feel like I've shared in the magic. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. That was wonderful. Thank you. These are coming with me. Just saying. Thanks Young Hollywood. Thank you so much for paying for these. That was really sweet of you. So nice. Not.
