WOMEN WE LOVE: Malia Obama
Not many people can say that they grew up in the White House AND that Donald Glover asked them to be a writer for his new TV show. But Malia Obama can! (Does it get any cooler than that? I don’t think so.) Malia just scored her first job and she hasn’t even graduated from college yet. She’s graduating this year (shoutout to the class of 2021)! Oh, and did we mention, she goes to Harvard University? Which also happens to be both her parents' law school alma mater? Talk about beauty AND brains.
The former First Daughter was reportedly asked to join the writing staff on Donald Glover’s (aka Childish Gambino) new show called "Hive" that is being made by Amazon Studios. The show is said to be about a Beyoncé-type character and the name, Hive, is said to be in reference to Beyoncé’s loyal followers called the Bey Hive.
This isn’t Malia’s first rodeo in Hollywood. Even though she’s only 22, she’s been pursuing her interests in the movie/television industry for a while now and she’s had some pretty cool opportunities. In 2017, she was an intern for The Weinstein Company and she was a production assistant for Extant on CBS. She even got to intern for "The Girls" on HBO during her gap year before college in 2016.
Well, one Obama in Hollywood is obviously not enough — her parents Barack and Michelle have a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce multiple projects over the coming years. They also have a production company called Higher Ground Productions whose mission is to tell stories surrounding the values the Obamas have always stood for.
As if all of that wasn’t impressive enough, here’s another reason to love her: she’s a proud activist like her mom. In 2017, she attended the Sundance Film Festival to protest the building of the Dakota Access Pipeline and she organized Black Lives Matter protests last summer.
You know how people always ask the question: “if you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would it be?" Well, I'm definitely adding her to my list!
