WOMEN WE LOVE: Azie Tesfai
At this point, every character on "Supergirl" could use a bit of therapy. Life in National City may not be as dark and depressing as in Gotham, but still, the Super Friends have been through it.
Now, full disclosure, we also want Kara and her crew to go to therapy simply because it would mean more time with Kelly Olsen, played by Azie Tesfai. More Azie Tesfai is always a good thing. In fact, one of the best things to come out of quarantining has been time with Azie Tesfai – at least virtually. While staying safe in Vancouver, Tesfai started her own Instagram mini-series, “Azie Tries Cooking”. She’s a self-proclaimed newbie to cooking, with the account’s bio reading “Ordered delivery 6 times a week then quarantine/covid happened.” What started as simply an account posting her delectable-looking creations has become almost a full-blown social media show, as Tesfai has started going live with her friends to try new recipes. Sometimes she’s the teacher, sometimes she’s the student, but at all times, it’s a good time.
“Azie Tries Cooking” has welcomed celebs including Nicole Maines, Aly Michalka, Anna Diop, and more, with each episode somehow funnier than the last.

This year on "Supergirl", we’ll get to see even more of Tesfai’s creativity. To kick off the month of February, it was revealed that Tesfai co-wrote the 12th episode of the superhero drama's 6th and final season. It’s a milestone for the Arrowverse, as this is the first time an actor has ever written a script for one of the shows.
"I am so grateful to write for 'Supergirl'‘s final season. It’s been such an honor to play Kelly Olsen, a BIPOC and queer character in the DC universe," Tesfai said at the time of the announcement. "Working in our amazing writers room and co-writing an episode has been an immensely educational and empowering experience. Writing is such a passion for me and I’m excited to continue on this creative journey."
Much like "Supergirl" itself, the move has inspired hope in fans -- Hope that Tesfai will return to the show’s roots, spotlighting its women and having them work together; Hope that Kelly herself will get a little more screentime; And, of course, hope for some truly heartwarming #Dansen scenes. Because, really, Tesfai has proven time and again that she truly listens to her fans and takes constructive criticism to heart.
Back in August, Tesfai revealed that she had not been informed that "Supergirl" would have any kind of presence at DC Fandome, and thus that she wouldn’t be part of it. Fan backlash was swift, criticizing the event and the network for its lack of communication, ultimately resulting in a lack of representation. In response, Tesfai posted this message to her followers:
Kelly Olsen is an intersectionally marginalized character. Black, gay, and a woman. She is important. And I feel honored to play her. I will fight harder for her and the visibility of these characters in media. I hear you all. And I take it very personally ❤️ Love you guys ?

The significance of her character, and of her upcoming writing debut, is not lost on her. And we love her all the more for it.
