Our 6 Favorite Fashion Moments from the 'Cruella' Trailer!
One of the most anticipated movies of the year is Disney’s Cruella, which serves as an origin story for the notorious Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmations. Emma Stone stars as Estella, a young British woman who wants to be a fashion designer; after she loses hope in her dream, she becomes Cruella and seeks revenge on Baroness von Hellman, a powerful woman in the fashion industry.
We got our first taste of the movie with a trailer that came out on February 18! Since the movie is set in London in the 1970s, the costumes are super fun with a retro feel. British designer Jenny Beavan, who also worked on movies like 1996’s Jane Eyre and 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, designed the costumes, cleverly using different color schemes to highlight Estella’s transformation into Cruella throughout the film.
Here are some of our favorite looks that appear in the trailer!
1. City Streetwear
The streetwear in this movie is stunning and matches the time period so well! It’s perfectly preppy and we love the fun pops of color, like one woman’s burgundy skirt and another’s green coat.
2. Work Uniform, But Make It Fashion
Before Estella becomes Cruella, she wears the same preppy style as the Londoners around her, with her leather jacket, chunky shoes, and bright red hair adding a bit of edge. It’s the perfect way to show how she sticks out despite her best efforts to fit in and make the most of her time in London.
3. Black and White Elegance
Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson) is a new, stylish character who runs a fashion house that Estella works at while trying to pursue her dream of being a designer. She seems to be part of why Estella couldn’t follow her fashion dreams, but we’ll have to wait for the movie to find out how! During a masquerade ball scene, she wears a gorgeous black and white dress with a dramatic collar, which helps her stand out from the crowd while still adhering to the party’s dress code. Clearly we can see where Cruella takes her fashion cues...
4. Grand Entrance
The first time we see Estella as Cruella in the trailer is when she enters the masquerade ball in a sophisticated white robe, only to burn it off and reveal a sleek red dress. It’s a bold look that makes her presence known while standing out in the mostly black and white crowd. (Katniss Everdeen vibes, anyone?!)
5. Checkerboard Chic
One of the coolest looks in the trailer is undoubtedly this textured monochrome look, which sharply stands out in what seems to be an upscale clothing store. We love the mix of fabrics and the dedication to the checked pattern!
6. Chained Up
Although we didn’t see much of it, we think this look will be one of the most epic and memorable! There’s something effortlessly edgy about the harsh chains against a black top, and the collar is a unique detail.
Which look are you most excited to see on the big screen?
