All The Little Ways "The Bold Type" Nails Female Friendships!
First, there was "Golden Girls". Then there was "Sex and the City". Now, we have a show centered on female friendship for the next generation.
Right now, no one is having more fun on screen than Kat, Jane, and Sutton of "The Bold Type".
Played by Aisha Dee, Katie Stevens, and Meghann Fahy, respectively, these women are funny, flawed, and, as the show’s title would suggest, bold. Their adventures each week are relatable and honest, and the actresses’ chemistry is undeniable.
But really, it comes down to the small moments in each episode; those are what make Kat, Jane, and Sutton’s friendship truly resonate with viewers.
Like the moments where you and your girlfriends are just on the same brain wavelength.
In this particular instance, Kat and Sutton were both just thinking about how much leg room they had in the car. It’s small and wholly off-topic in the moment, but there’s something so reaffirming about your friendship in these kinds moments that, yes, you literally have to stop and call it out to have a bonding moment.
Of course, there are times when you and your best friends aren’t totally psychic. Even in those moments, though, you instinctually go along with whatever the plan is. Like when Sutton’s plan involved the three ladies getting naked, without context.
There’s absolutely a moment where you have to stop and process what’s happening, but with true best friends, it doesn’t totally matter.
Regardless of if getting naked is part of the plan, there will be boob jokes. Boob jokes will ALWAYS happen among female BFFs. We pretty much take the opening whenever we can, much like Jane did in the fashion closet.
Further proof that that was a real moment? It was literally real. According to Katie Stevens, during the women’s appearance on the BUILDSeries, the script didn’t actually have Jane complimenting Sutton’s “rack”.
Stevens just threw it in on a take, because that’s how her friendship with Meghann Fahy actually goes. The writers, being the smart cookies they are, just left it in.
Now, so far in Season 4 of "The Bold Type", the biggest moment has been Sutton’s engagement to Richard.
Unlike most TV proposals, it didn’t involve some huge romantic gesture involving all of the couple’s friends playing some part. It was a private, intimate (in more ways than one) moment in the boardroom.
But Richard is a smart man, and he knew the cardinal rule of proposing: get the approval of the best friends. They don’t have to be directly involved in the proposal, but they should be aware that it’s happening.
From there, an understanding is reached. When you propose to a woman, you’re also proposing to her best friends.
Jane’s excitement during Sutton’s donut tasting is literally every bride-to-be’s best friend. Because wedding planning is a group effort, and now the groom is going to be around forever. The best friends have already been around for forever. He’s just joining the team.
And sometimes – read: LOTS of times – best friends propose to each other
If we’re being honest, I proposed to one of my best friends two weeks ago. It’s just a thing.
It’s not always just for fun, though. After all, what woman hasn’t had a girl friend pretend to be a girlfriend to get some creepy, persistent guy to back off? Or at least had one ready to pretend on standby? Dating is hard, and we have to have each other’s backs.
A lot of times, that involves texting your girl during a date. Because if you see your BFF out in the wild, on a date with a cute guy, you have to interrupt somehow. I don’t make the rules, I just follow them.
Fortunately for Jane, Kat and Sutton were fairly subtle about seeing her talking to Pinstripe. Kind of. Almost.
Once it’s clear that you’re okay, it just becomes merciless teasing from there. It’s a lot of fun, I promise.
Then of course there’s helping your best friend out in the most important way – crafting an Instagram post.
For Sutton, it’s been a bit more necessary, because she’s literally trying to become an influencer.
But in any real friendship, this is a regular occurrence. Every girl will ask her friends for input on a potential Insta post. And once it’s posted, that friend becomes an even bigger hype woman in the comments.
It’s truly a beautiful thing, female friendship. It’s not always done right on television, and it can be painful to see. But when it comes to "The Bold Type"? They get it. They really get it.
