7 Things You Didn’t Know About 'Birds of Prey'!
Who said quarantine time had to be boring?
Director Cathy Yan recently gave us some mind-blowing facts about Birds of Prey on Twitter while she was rewatching the movie, and ICYMI, we can’t wait to share the best ones with you!
Let’s find out what makes this movie as crazy and fun as it is, but careful: There might be little spoilers ahead!
1. Bruce The Hyena was “played” by an adorable German Shepherd.
Turns out, Harley Quinn’s newest eccentric pet was actually portrayed by the “amazingly cute” Varko the dog!
I don’t know how much CGI was needed, but it was pretty convincing if you ask me. I only wish that we got some behind the scenes pictures with him and the cast -- It’d been so adorable!
2. The ACE Chemicals explosion truly tested Margot’s toughness.
Remember when Harley officially updated her relationship status?
According to Cathy Yan, “The night that we shot the Ace Chemicals explosion was FREEZING. Margot Robbie was such a champ hanging out in those shorts.” If we take a look at the cool, party outfit that Harley was wearing, we have to agree: Margot’s professionalism definitely needs to be acknowledged!
3. Pickpocketing was taken very seriously.
This fun fact comes from Cassandra Kane herself, played by Ellajay Basco.
Apparently, she worked for two months with a professional magician so the pickpocketing scene with the diamond would look perfect. How amazing is that? She must’ve been a natural, because the final result looked very real!
4. Ewan’s pajamas apparently have his face on them.
I honestly don’t know how I didn’t notice this when I first saw the movie, but it’s true: Ewan McGregor’s face is all over his pajamas. If you missed it too, don’t worry: it’s in the first trailer, just go to 0.49 -- or just check out the pic at the top of this article!
But who was the genius behind this fashion choice? Erin Bennach, the official costume designer for Birds of Prey and the woman that Cathy “loves more than anything!”
5. Margot’s hair-cutting scene had a lot at stake.
Did you know the scene when Harley cuts her ponytails was shot in a single take?
Cathy explained that they only had one wig and no time for reshooting, so Margot only had one chance to get it right. Obviously, she did a flawless job and Cathy got it perfectly!
6. Mary’s Mandarin is actually pretty good.
Cathy must’ve been very busy on set, because while she was directing the movie she was also the “Mandarin consultant” for Huntress’s dialogue (played by the amazing Mary Elizabeth Winstead). And in her own words, “Mary killed it!”
But she wasn’t the only one proud of her performance: Fans quickly praised her intonations and recognised her talent for Mandarin!
7. There’s a little tribute to The Professional.
The shot of Harley and Cassandra walking away from the camera while the “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” montage was taking place was, according to Cathy, “an ode to the famous shot in The Professional, but in reverse”.
Did you catch that? I certainly didn’t, but looks like I now have an excuse to watch Birds of Prey again!
Birds of Prey is now available on digital!
