3 Young NFL Quarterbacks To Watch Out For This Season!

Written by Kate Anne Trott. Published: September 19 2023

It is the majority opinion that the best quarterback in the NFL this year is Patrick Mahomes. He tops the list as the number one player this season. Coming in second behind Mahomes is Jalen Hurts, which makes sense as the two went head-to-head against each other in last season’s Super Bowl, with the Kansas City Chiefs facing the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mahomes and Hurts were neck-and-neck, with tier one Mahomes playing 6 seasons in his career and tier two Hurts playing 3. Although Mahomes emerged victorious in last year’s Super Bowl, everyone is wondering whether he will stay on top or if someone will take his place. The 2023-24 NFL season is unusual with so many young quarterbacks starting, and everyone wants to know who they should look out for this year!

1. Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals)

Shockingly, Joe Burrow is the highest paid player in the NFL to date. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback just signed a 5-year, $275 million dollar contract extension. With a tier one rating, on par with Mahomes, Joe Burrow is one to watch this year.

Originally beginning his college career at Ohio State University with the Buckeyes, Burrow was a backup quarterback. Frustrated that he was spending his college career warming the bench, he transferred to LSU in 2018. As a redshirt junior, he was named starting quarterback. He led the team to victory in the 2020 National Championship game against Clemson.

At the 2020 draft, Burrow was selected first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals, where he signed his 4-year rookie contract. His performance in his first 3 seasons was impeccable and has a 24-17-1 record. With his new contract and fantastic record, he will be one to watch this season.

2. Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers)

A lovable underdog, 23-year-old Brock Purdy is a fan favorite. He began his football career at Iowa State as their starting quarterback for 4 years. He was the very last pick in the 2022 NFL draft, where he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers. To start his rookie season, he was third string, with Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo as first and second string.

In Week 2 of the 2022 NFL season, Trey Lance sustained an ankle injury and was out for the season when Jimmy Garoppolo took over. Then in Week 13, Garoppolo had an injury that forced Purdy to finish out the rest of the game. Performing well, he led the team to victory, and due to Garoppolo’s injury, was named starting quarterback for the team.

Shortly after, he led the 49ers to victory against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers 35-7. The win gained a lot of people’s attention, and the 49ers tweeted that Purdy was “Mr. Relevant” after the game. His victory wasn’t just a one-time stroke of luck, though, as he finished the regular NFL season with a 6-0 in career stats.

However, in the NFC Championship game against the Eagles, he suffered an injury and the team lost, ending their season. With Purdy back and better than ever, he began the 2023 NFL season starting with the 49ers against the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning 30-7.

3. Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars)

Beginning his football career with an outstanding high school record of 2 state championships, 4 regional titles, and National High School Player of the Year honors, Trevor Lawrence was regarded as the best high school prospect of all time. In 2016, he committed to Clemson and became the first true freshman quarterback to start in a national championship game since 1985.

In 2019, he won the National Championship Game and, in 2020, went head-to-head with Joe Burrow in the National Championship Game and lost. He played all 3 years at Clemson, graduating as a Junior, and went on to be first overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars at the 2021 NFL draft. Unfortunately, his 2021 season went poorly for him due to the Urban Meyer drama, which affected the entire team's performance. They went 3-14-0 during the season.

His 2022 season, he finished with a passer rating of 95.2 with 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions in 17 games. He led his team to a record of 9-8-0. His passer rating of 71.9 in 2021 to 95.2 last season is the largest increase in NFL history for any quarterback. The Jaguars came back pretty strongly from a horrible previous year, and Lawrence proved himself as the star quarterback that fans were waiting for.

To kick off the first game of the 2022 season, Lawrence completed 24 of 32 passes for 241 yards and 2 touchdowns with one interception for a 31-21 win over the Colts. His improvement from the 2021 season to the 2022 season is just an inkling of the progress he is expected to make this season.
