Wonder Woman storms to the top of the box office with record-breaking opening

Wonder Woman has shattered records at the box office after hauling in over $100 million over the weekend (02-04Jun17).

The female superhero movie, starring Gal Gadot, scored the biggest opening for a film directed by a female, with critics raving about Patty Jenkins' stunning new blockbuster - the latest release in the DC Comics universe.

In the movie, Israeli star Gadot plays Princess Diana, an Amazonian warrior who leaves her home paradise to help Chris Pine's Steve Trevor and a band of unlikely heroes fight the Germans in World War One.

The film made more in its opening weekend than the rest of the top 10 put together, with new release Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie coming in at two with $23.5 million, and Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales rounding out the top three, with a $21.6 million second weekend take.

Another Disney release, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Baywatch round out the new top five.

Internationally, the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie picked up another $73.8 million to take its tally past $500 million. Johnny Depp's new movie actually beat out Wonder Woman in Russia, Italy, and Spain and other smaller markets.

But Wonder Woman was the world's leader with a global bow of $223 million.

The blockbuster also becomes the 16th superhero film to cross $100 million at the box office in its opening weekend, beating out the debuts of first two Thor and Captain America movies, as well as the first Iron Man.
