Amber Rose: 'I am not just Kanye West's ex-girlfriend'

Written by . Published: July 03 2016

Amber Rose is sick and tired of tabloid reports forever linking her to her exes, Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa.

The model dated Kanye from 2008 to 2010 and was married to Wiz, the father of her son, for a year until they split in 2014.

Amber's likeness appears in Kanye's controversial new Famous video, in which she appears to be lying naked in bed next to her ex, his wife Kim Kardashian, her ex Ray J, and West's rival Taylor Swift, among other stripped celebrities.

Everyone in the video is someone Kanye has been connected to in the past, but Amber wants people to know she has built her career on her own since splitting from him six years ago - and she hates being referred to as his ex-girlfriend.

"The misconception - and I still hear this seven years later, to this day - is, 'You're only famous for Kanye," she tells The Daily Beast.

"Initially, absolutely. In 2009, when they're like, 'Amber Rose - Kanye's girlfriend,' I was like, 'OK, that's pretty accurate. That's what it is.' But I didn't ask to be famous, and I didn't even talk or do interviews for two years, because I thought, 'I don't want this. I'm not famous.'

"Over time, with going out in public, I realized it would never go away, so I didn't have any choice but to progress," she continues. "Everything I've done since then is my own doing, and I've worked my f**king a** off for everything I have... But they (tabloid reporters and chat show hosts) always want to diminish my accomplishments and put them on someone else when I work really hard."

And now she is ready to shake off her links to the past by fronting a new talk show for American network VH1 - something she insists she couldn't have done when she was married to rapper Wiz.

"When you're in a relationship, especially with a famous man... there are certain things that you stop yourself from doing," she explains. "Wiz is a rapper so he talks about 'f**king hos' and doing s**t like that, but I'm a feminist, so I have my views about that, while also supporting my husband in his craft, and supporting him to be creative.

"That became very difficult. And now that we've separated, I was able to have my own voice and do me. And it worked."
