What's going on guys? Hanging with me today, I have Charlie Webber from How to Get Away with Murder. What's up Charlie? What's happening? How are you?
Good, good.
How are you doing?
I'm doing well.
I like your casual look. It's very cool young Hollywood.
Thanks. Yeah. Thought I'd Yeah, you know, thought I'd keep it young. Keep it from becoming our not so young Hollywood.
So congratulations on the show How to Get Away with Murder.
Thanks.
It's one of my favorite shows of all time. I just want to start the interview with that.
Oh, thank you.
Not just cuz you're here on the couch, I mean it. Like, it's really intense.
It's definitely, definitely intense. Yeah.
And you play Frank, who's kind of like the bad boy, right? That's like, loves the ladies, works for Annalise Keating, played by Viola Davis. And you rock a beard, which the ladies love.
Yeah, it's a little less than the than I started out with and then we went no beard for a bit and now it's back. Yeah.
So, what do you think it is about Frank, your character, that everyone loves so much? Like, the bad boy beard kind of thing.
Yeah, you know, I think, I think uh, even with all his his bad deeds, it's always coming from this bizarre place of love or at least his his idea of what love is. And he tries to to be valuable in his own way, which often times is is, you know, murder but uh.
Right.
But, you know, I I think people respond to the fact that he's actually just a guy with a big heart that doesn't know what he's doing. About love and life and it's just a it's just a lost, lost soul. Yeah.
So you also get to work with one of my one of my favorite people of all time, Viola Davis.
Oh, one of my favorite people. Yeah.
Twins. Um, so I want to know what's your favorite part about working with her? Cuz, I mean, she's like an icon.
I think it's sort of just like the overall thing and and after all these years, you know, it started out so intimidating. Uh but then at a certain point in time, it shifts to being friends and being colleagues and it just becomes someone that's part of your life and I think sort of fading into just sort of this casual relationship with someone that is an icon like that has been kind of the coolest experience.
Yeah, I bet, I can't even imagine. You have a really cool story about her. Well, I don't know if you think it's cool. We think it's cool and kind of funny. You threw up before
That was on the pilot. I I kinda got a little know, I used to kinda get nauseous before like a big football game or a big track meet and and that kinda carried over into my adult life with acting and and yeah, I kinda I I kept it together but that was it was uh, I I wasn't out of the woods uh uh when I came out of my trailer to go to set to work with her for the first time. But it was intimidating. It was very It was It was more sort of like excitement and nerves. But yeah, that was a Can't believe I've been doing this that long.
Okay. Yeah, really, huh? Yeah. So the show has so many twists and turns.
Yeah.
If you had to choose a moment that was probably the most shocking reveal for you as an actor, what would it be and why?
I think, I think for me as an actor, the toughest thing to deal with and to wrap my brain around was that Frank was responsible for the death of Annalise's unborn child and that was it it it benefited me as an actor to be devastated by that as a like my performance is very genuine when I'm called out on that because that was sort of devastating news for for both me and Frank that that was the case.
Do you think, do you ever find it like kind of like exhausting just because it's an actor in that show, it's like It's very subtle. It is very subtle. You guys have to get so deep.
No, no. I I love it but it is a it's an exhausting show to to to do just because of the amount of work and the emotional content and then just the different places you have to go in the peaks and valleys of it all. Yeah, it's I I love it but it's very difficult.
Yeah. I mean, you do an amazing job. Of course. So, another show that I love, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal. You guys are doing a little crossover.
We are.
How did you react to that?
I thought it was cool. I I I you know, I feel like it's been a long time coming, so I'm not I wasn't shocked when they told me. It actually I was a little surprised it took this long. But, uh, I think it's gonna be really cool. We'll see we'll see how it all all comes together, you know?
If you could describe Shonda in one word, what would it be? Have you met her? Like, what's going on with that? Like, it's
Yeah, I know. Uh, you know, she she obviously is our big boss and executive producer. Pete Nowalk, who created the show, was, you know, a protege of hers. Um, so she lets him sort of captain the ship in a lot of ways. She she uh, she doesn't come in too often. She will from time to time. But, uh, certainly I've met her. I've been in her company numerous times and she's a a lovely, lovely person but, um, uh, endlessly talented and and somewhat intimidating. But, you know, that's someone like that's going to be.
So to top out the interview, can you look at camera and just give me your best, "I just got away with murder" look? Can we like throw it to camera on three? Let me see.
Well, okay. I'll okay, I'll do it and then I'll explain it. Ooh. If you want because it's all in the subtlety. Getting away with murder is is acting like nothing happened.
Okay. Well, I mean, that's fair enough. Okay, so I'm actually gonna watch you do it. So I'll give you a count. Ready? So, 3, 2, 1.
Ooh. That's it. That's it. That's pretty subtle.
Okay. So that's how you explain it. Just kind of like nothing happened.
That's how you gotta throw it away. You gotta throw it away. It's like, it's just another day.
Another day. I like it. Thank you so much, Charlie, for coming by. It was a pleasure.
Thank you. My pleasure. Right on.
