Hey what's up guys? Young Hollywood is here at The London Hotel in Los Angeles where we are about to sit down with Alison Brie and Marc Maron from the hit Netflix series, Glow.
Hey guys.
Hi.
How's it going?
I'm okay. How are you?
I love this show. It is amazing. And I love that it's set in the 80s. What is that like playing characters in the 80s?
Well, I think what's great about our show is that it's um, I guess when it all comes together and with the wrestling, it doesn't appear that subtle but when we're acting it, I'm never thinking like, we're in the 80s, you know, I think that we get to play you know, again, outside the ring we get to play really grounded characters who are kind of just living their lives. It's interesting to do a show in the 80s and see how relevant all those issues still are today.
It's just such an interesting show and it's such a different type of show and new idea. What were your auditions like for this show? I was asking the girls before, did you have to wrestle like in your audition?
We sort of did. I, well in my first audition they asked about kind of what how physically active I was and I was like giving a list of the type of training that I do and things like that.
What was on that list?
Yoga. You know, yeah, training, yoga, hiking, climbing my climber classes.
My my audition was not that as exciting as that. I I literally got my my management sent me the the part sent me the script and I was like, I could do this guy. And they I didn't even go in. I literally got the woman who's my personal trainer sometimes she's also an actress so she read your part and then I had this guy who works for me tape me on the phone and I went and borrowed some aviator glasses from this glasses place down the street and I put on a lacoste shirt and I just did the scene with the on the on the iPhone and they they cast me off of that.
You don't have to wrestle because you're like the director.
No, I don't. I just have to, you know, make them wrestle and then you walk around being cranky and kind of aggravated.
You enjoy watching us wrestle though.
I love it. It always does. I always get choked up when they pull it off. You know, like, yeah, I have to pretend like I'm I there's something moving about it. Like the first time when her and Betty fight for real that wasn't even wrestling when Betty comes in in season one and she's mad at you and gets in the ring. I'm up, I'm perched on this office and my on the top of the stairs and I was like it was emotional I got all like weird and choked up.
Yeah. That wasn't on camera though. It was emotional for all of us.
And how do you get ready for that scene? You're like I hate her. I hate her. I hate her like how do you get like Oh no.
Well, I mean, in that scene my character was really caught off guard by her arriving so I was really not thinking about that at all. But usually I listen to a lot of 80s music uh when we're shooting the show. I have different songs. Yeah that I'll listen to before we do big matches and stuff like that. But mostly it's very boring. You're like, how do you get revved up for the match? And it's like we stretch in the ring we talk through the moves again to make sure it's safe. Go through this. Sometimes Chavo our wrestling coach will play us Eye of the Tiger and stuff like that like right before we're about to go.
That'll get you.
That's pretty cool. That's what that song's for. Yeah. So your character in the first season is playing this struggling actress trying to take any job that she can and she kind of falls into this wrestling world. Can you relate to that at all personally?
Um just from the struggling actress aspect of it. Absolutely. I I what I relate to the most with Ruth is um the feeling of being underestimated and like you're capable of so much more but you're not getting the opportunities to show that off and I'm I'm sure a lot of young actresses feel that way. Certainly there was a time in my career and still that I sometimes feel like I should take any job and you have to kind to bolster yourself up on your own. You know, Ruth has a lot of creative ideas of how to advance her own career and I like her the best when she is sort of putting that foot forward and empowering herself.
You're in incredible shape and would you would you um say that that's from a lot of the training of this show too?
Yeah, absolutely.
She only eats almonds.
Isn't that the LA diet?
I have worked with a personal trainer for years but we certainly upped the ante when I was going to work on this show because I wanted that strength. We do four weeks of wrestling training before shooting the show. We did it before season one. We did it again before season two. So yes, I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life. Yeah.
Describe season two in one word.
Bold.
I'm going to go with emotional.
Emotional?
For me, yeah.
Yeah, yeah. Bold and emotional. I like it. Thanks guys. Can't wait for season two.
Thank you.
