Why All Together Now's Rhenzy Feliz Prefers Going To The Movies Alone

About this video
We first became acquainted with actor Rhenzy Feliz when he was leader of the pack of rebels known as Marvel's "Runaways" for Hulu. Now, he makes the jump to another streaming giant, Netflix, for the coming-of-age drama 'All Together Now' as the loyal bff of Moana herself, Auli'i Cravalho. Young Hollywood catches up with the rising star via Zoom to talk about this and his other roles and how he mentally prepares himself for more emotionally-charged scenes. He also explains to us why he prefers to go to the movies alone, plus we play a quarantine-edition of "Like or Dislike" with him to find out how he feels about things like ordering from Uber Eats, home workouts, Zoom chats, and more!

What's up? How are you?
I'm good. How are you?
Good. How's your morning going so far?
Uh, so far, so good. Um, yeah, nothing too eventful, but uh, I still haven't eaten, so I should I should do that soon.
yet. Pre-Covid, what would you what would you usually do on the weekends? Would you go out on like
Yeah, yeah. I'd go out, uh, maybe like I'm 22 now, so getting drinks with my friends is like a fun thing. The movie theaters a lot. You'll find me at a movie theater alone like way too often. I'll go by myself. I don't care. Yeah. I love I love
go alone?
Oh, absolutely. I I almost prefer it. I realize I almost like going by myself cuz I don't have anyone to tell me nothing. I can watch whatever I like, I can do whatever I need. I like sitting down, watching it in its entirety without blinking once, all the way through. I love it.
Do you get snacks?
Yeah, yeah. Uh, I'm a big fan of Raisinets.
Got you. That's a popcorn or candy type of guy.
Yeah, yeah. I I for whatever reason, I don't really like popcorn all that much, but uh, Raisinets I'm a big, too big. Yeah.
When it comes to, you know, since you're watching all these movies, when it comes to your own stuff that you're in, what do you usually what's your go-to choice of watching something that you're in?
Um, well, there's not that many things to choose from. I'm still pretty new to this game. Um, I really liked the show Casual, the first show that I did. Um, the show as a whole, I liked it a lot. I don't like much of what I did in it, but I liked the show. I think the thing that I like the most is this the new Netflix movie I've come out. Yeah. I remember around the time that I was like thinking about it, I saw a movie called Spectacular Now with Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley and I was like, I want to make something that it was just such a grounded, like real, honest film. Um, now of course, that one sort of followed their relationship a little bit more, um, than I think this one follows a relationship, but there's something really honest and and it has a lot of heart, I think this movie, and that's something that I really look for in in films.
Definitely. And in the trailer, there you have a line in there that it's I tried to text you, but it failed to deliver. Um, has that ever happened to you in real life? Has anyone like switched up a number or blocked me?
Um, I'm trying to think. I Uh, I don't think so. It's it's more on like the romantic side of things for sure.
What was it like tapping into, you know, like getting in your feels and stuff on camera?
That that's uh, I love it. I I I I think I think because I hate doing it so much in real life, that whenever they they're like paying me and it's my job to do it, then I can sort of easily do it. Um, I kind of like getting into like those either like argument things or like really passionate scenes, things like that, because I think I shy away from that in real life more so like I sort of maybe keep those things inside. And then whenever I get on camera or on stage, they sort of you're allowed to really and you're trying to be as honest as you can, so you kind of you really tap into something and those for me are like the the most fun to do, I think.
Yeah, and we were gonna ask you like speaking of that, getting like so emotional on screen and like tapping into that. How do you mentally get prepared to do scenes like that?
Um, I just try to I mean, I guess it's different for everybody, but I try to um, really, really, really genuinely understand where this character is coming from. Um, and I think if you I think if anyone has enough understanding about anyone or anything, um, you can grow a big a big uh, level of empathy for them. Try not to force anything. And if all of that fails, I just think of really sad shit that's happened to me in my life and then I And then that'll get me there too.
Yeah. After after those scenes, do you guys like laugh, like when they say cut, are you like laughing afterwards or you're kind of like need to collect yourself? Does it feel real? To kind of like have to like emotionally recover from it?
For sure. Yeah. It's weird like it's weird that way, like whenever I've done really dramatic stuff, um, yes, I mean, you're trying to convince yourself you're really in these situations. So, they'll yell cut, and I'll go and cry some more. Like, it's not even like it's not it doesn't end right there. You kind of have to like decompress a bit. Um
Right.
Because for a second there, you really are sad about something, you know? And that's uh, you're trying to find, you're trying to put it up as real as it can be. Um, at least I try to. And so, whenever they all cut, it's still pretty it's still going on inside my body, you know?
Yeah. Okay, we're gonna play a quick game if you're down.
I'm down.
Okay, it's game of like or dislike. So, I'm gonna kind of read off things that are going on, you know, in quarantine, and you're gonna say if you like it or you get annoyed by it.
Let's go. Let's go.
Okay, so, depends what phone you have, but having to remove um, your mask just to unlock your phone.
Dislike. Yeah, not a fan. I mean, I do, I'll do what I gotta do. I'll wear the damn mask, but it's I I I actually don't even take I just I type in my my code as quickly as I can, just to Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Only talking to people through Zoom, like or dislike?
Oh, dislike. Huge dislike. I even this, I mean, I'll I'll like I said, I'll do what I have to, but I like in person stuff. Ask my friends, I don't even I don't even text them back. If they call me, I'll pick up most of the time, but I'm I'm more of a I'm more of an in-person kind of thing. Yeah.
Yeah. Uh, ordering Uber Eats, like or dislike?
Oh, like. Yeah. We like that. So much. Yeah, yeah. I I I'm trying to learn more and more how to cook now, um, so that I can so I stop ordering so much Uber Eats and stuff, but uh, it's not working out too well.
Uh, the amount of times people ask you, so, what you been up to?
Uh, dislike. I mean, what do you think? I've been sitting in my apartment doing absolutely. What what else are we doing? No one's doing anything. Yeah. No. Or like, oh, how you been keeping busy? Like, no. Nothing impressive.
Um, how much snacking you're doing? You snack more or less?
Um, I I don't I don't snack almost at all. Uh, wait, should I have said like or dislike? Is that someone asking me?
Yeah, do you like how much you can snack or how much you are snacking or you don't really
Yeah, I'm not snacking. That's the thing. Yeah. My my so weird you asked me that. My mom asked me yesterday, um, like, do you have any snacks at your place? Like, are you even grocery shopping? I'm like, yeah, I grocery shop. I don't have any She's like, do you have any like cheese sticks? I'm like, no. She's like, do you have any yogurt? No. Do you have any granola bars? I'm like, I don't have any damn snacks in my apartment. Like, I only I either have meals or I Uber Eats it. Yeah.
Uh, like or dislike home workouts?
Uh, I haven't done much gym ones, so I wouldn't really know, but I've been home working out quite a bit now. I need to do something. Otherwise, I'll drive myself insane. I've been working out at home, and I like them. I like them, but I don't know enough to know about what the gym life is like. So, I don't know comparing with that one. Yeah, yeah, I don't know. Yeah.
Well, perfect. Well, thank you so much for talking to us today.
