Tom Cullen, Tatiana Maslany, & Jay Duplass Spill on Meaning of Pink Wall Film

All right guys, here with the cast of The Pink Wall. Welcome to Austin, Texas. I got to know, was this your guys' first time here?

I lived here for 12 years.

12 years, Jay. Okay.

We were here b- b- we were here once.

Three years.

Yeah. We were here one time for a week.

Has Jay like showed you around even more so though? Like he, I feel like Jay has all the underground spots.

I'm a middle-aged man. 12 years, he knows some things. I do know some things, but they would we would have to drive to them. And there there would be pickled eggs on the on the shelf of the bar.

Is that a is that a staple, pickled eggs?

Pickled eggs is a staple in old Texas bars.

Some of the some of the food I I've realized is pecan pie is like a big thing in Austin, Texas. Have you had you tried that?

I love pecan pie.

Okay. So you have to try it here then. Okay, yeah. I'm Right, Jay? Is that a thing? You have to. I will not let you leave until you eat pecan pie.

It's the thing. It's the thing.

Tell me a little bit about the movie. I really love the synopsis of it, but I want to hear it from your guys' perspective.

So the film is six defining moments of a relationship. And each So it's essentially six scenes and each scene is a year of their relationship told in an A-linear structure. The hope is that the audience at the end of it uh it feels like an experience, like they've witnessed the relationship. When they're struggling, they're also falling in love at the same time. And I think that that's very true. Uh, you know, at the end of a relationship, you're still also at the beginning of a relationship. And that's kind of what is what it's designed like.

And then for you guys, what was your guys' reaction when you first read the script and just kind of getting into these roles? I mean, it's a very like you said, it's a very complex kind of movie in the sense of how it's told in like the human brain is how we interpret things, right?

Tom and I had been talking about it for a while and he'd been kind of like musing on the idea. So I kind of was with was with it from the inc in conception. And I think we always had Jay in mind for the

We always wanted Jay for the part. Yeah, I saw Jay in in Transparent and I was just fell hard in love with him as a character, but also but more also as an actor. And so as soon as I saw him, it was like this trigger of this idea. I was like, he's the guy that he's the man. And luckily he was stupid enough to agree to do it.

Has there been a moment that you guys ever looked back on like, oh, this really changed my life?

For me, uh I had my first ever job as an actor was a film called Weekend that one came to uh Southwest by Southwest and won the audience award. And and that really was a life changing moment for me in terms of my career and it led to me meeting Tatiana and and uh and starting a kind of great journey in my life that is both artistic and uh

Romantic.

Romantic. It's it's almost full full circle too, right?

Yeah, you can come and back. Yeah, it's it's I I love being here. Yeah. Yeah, South by. It's like I just love it. It's got a great energy.

South by. Tatiana, anything?

I don't know what's changed my life.

You got to. See? See?

I'm happy to rethink my life now.

You got to think about this.

There's one moment in the film that's sort of a misstep in the relationship that they don't really recover from. And I've definitely had those moments where I could look at a relationship and say, Um, this one thing really tanked this relationship. And it's not necessarily that you have that the one thing will tank it, but if you don't deal with it properly, it will tank it.

It's like a balancing thing where like that one thing just tips off.

Yeah. And it you can never recover from it if you don't have the awareness and if you don't take it head on and you don't have the courage to explore it. And that's that's something that happens in this film is is they're they're sort of like dancing around this this event that happened. But the event, of course, is not just an event. It represents the inherent problem between the two characters.

Lastly, what does The Pink Wall mean to you guys?

The cool thing that we discovered that Pink Wall meant was it was like the equivalent of blue for women.

Oh, okay.

So there's so and I kind of love that as like a uh bizarre subtext to what the movie kind of explores. Jenna's got a hunger that she's like can't quite quench. Like she says in the trailer, like, I don't know how to stop. There's something in her that's like that's not that isn't satisfied.

Never enough.
