About this video

You might recognize Kyle Allen as the ill-fated perfect specimen Timothy Campbell in the "Apocalypse" season of "American Horror Story", and now he is nothing less than the leading man in fantasy romance film 'The Map of Tiny Perfect Things' opposite Kathryn Newton! Young Hollywood catches up with the actor via Zoom where he shares with us reaction to seeing the film for the first (and second) time and how he relates to his on-screen counterpart! We also play a game of "Perfect or Pass" to find out how he feels about hypothetical scenarios like reliving his perfect day every day for a year, living in the character Henry's room for two years, and more! Plus, Kyle teases some other projects he's got coming up, like the long-awaited Steven Spielberg remake of the classic musical 'West Side Story'!

Young Hollywood

Welcome to Virtual Young Hollywood, you made it. You're here.

Kyle Allen

I made it. And I'm here. In my house.

Young Hollywood

Yes. Congrats on the movie finally coming out. The world can see it. How are you feeling?

Kyle Allen

I feel good. I feel, I feel, I feel pretty good.

Young Hollywood

How many times have you watched it?

Kyle Allen

Three.

Young Hollywood

Did you watch it after it came out or three times before?

Kyle Allen

I saw it once before, and then I've seen it twice after. I think on the premiere day and then I watched it at the actual premiere.

Young Hollywood

Do you like watching yourself? Do you cringe? How do you feel when you watch yourself?

Kyle Allen

Um, I think the first time, I, I think I was in, I was in the screening room and I was just like, I was white knuckling it the whole time. I was just like gripping, gripping my seat with everything I had. Yeah. Um, I think that's just a reaction. I don't really know why. Um, there's no thoughts going on in my head, it's just kind of like panic. Um, And then I would say the second time, oh my gosh, I think I've actually only seen it twice. Yeah. Yeah, I've only seen it twice. Um, but the second time I was much more calm.

Young Hollywood

Right. You kind of knew what was gonna happen.

Kyle Allen

I was like, I was like, I'm aware, things are okay. This is this is, this is good. And I was, I was, I was able to like watch it and really appreciate it.

Young Hollywood

Just kinda got it over.

Kyle Allen

Yeah. All the nonsense. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

How do you feel like you relate to the character in your real life? Are you like him at all?

Kyle Allen

Yeah, um, I, I mean, I, I feel like we would just do similar things with this circumstance. I think I'm about as awkward as he. I think I have about as much game with, with women as him. I, uh, yeah, I think I'm uh, yeah. I mean, I think we've got about an equivalent amount of awkwardness.

Young Hollywood

So when you read the part, you're like, oh, I got it. I can be this guy. It's me. This is me. Like for instance, like what's the hair? What is what do I do with it? Why do like you know. I'm like he wouldn't know either. What to do with it either. Yeah. So this will be my interview. Yep. We're gonna we're gonna play a game. You're gonna like the game since you are very have a lot of energy. It's called Perfect or Pass, okay? Perfect or Pass. So I'm gonna read off a list of scenarios and you're either going to be like, okay, that's perfect, yes, amazing, or you're gonna pass on and be like, I wouldn't do that, okay? Great. Okay. So picture this, it's the best day of your entire life. Okay? Best day ever. So you have, you have the chance in real life to relive that same day for a year. Or like just like the movie, is that perfect to you or are you gonna pass? You have for for a full year. Just the same day over and over. 365 of the best days ever. And then time continues.

Kyle Allen

I'd have to try it. I'd have to try it even if it was miserable. I'd have to, I'd have to give it a shot. That's, that's gotta be perfect.

Young Hollywood

Okay. Perfect. No passing on that one. Okay. You win $1 million, but you can't spend it on anyone but yourself. Is that perfect or do you pass?

Kyle Allen

That's perfect. Who would pass?

Young Hollywood

It would just depend if you feel guilty about not spending the money.

Kyle Allen

Uh, no. No. I would just, you're like that's what the that million dollars I get to spend on myself. Everything else I make can go to someone else. Oh, perfect.

Young Hollywood

So it's perfect. No passing on that one. Yeah. Okay. So say there was a sequel to the movie, you get a chance to star in it again with Katherine Newton, are you, is it perfect? Are you gonna pass?

Kyle Allen

Yes, perfect. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

We figured you're gonna say that. I knew it was gonna but I knew you just picked a bunch of perfect things. Okay. Someone wants to write a book about your life, but you can't put any input in. Like you can't comment on it, nothing. Someone's just gonna write it. And then you have to read it once it's done. Is that perfect or are you gonna pass?

Kyle Allen

That's perfect. That's fantastic.

Young Hollywood

I didn't know what you were gonna say for that one. I didn't know if you were gonna pass or not. That's perfect. That's how exciting. What do you think would be the title of the book?

Kyle Allen

Oops.

Young Hollywood

Nice. What would be your favorite chapter?

Kyle Allen

Uh, the, the one, um, titled, why would you do that, Kyle? That'd probably be the best chapter.

Young Hollywood

We'd enjoy reading that. Yeah. Yeah. Be like, compilations of all the of the ridiculous things I've done. Yeah. Good chapter. Okay. So you get to live in the same room as you did when Henry was playing the video games for two years. Two years. You're just in the room. All the time. Do I get to leave that room? No, you get Uber Eats delivered. You get everything just delivered to you. You're in the room with him for two years. Is that perfect or are you gonna pass?

Kyle Allen

Oh my gosh, but like that's so much quality time spent with Germain. I mean, we haven't

Young Hollywood

You should see in that room, like they didn't even get into it, but like our, our set design went. They have every game, every game system.

Kyle Allen

Might be perfect then if they have every game. I mean that's kinda perfect. That's kinda perfect. I'd get a lot I'd get a lot of uh, I'd get a lot of Germain time in. I'd love that. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Which is key. You wouldn't mind that. So you perfect to literally everything. Everything's perfect.

Kyle Allen

I think I, I kinda made that a a secret goal but I found, I found I found it easy to say perfect for all those, all those things were perfect for me.

Young Hollywood

Aside from the film coming out, what is one thing that you're looking forward to that's coming up in your life?

Kyle Allen

Ooh. Ah, so many things. Um, I'm gonna be shooting a movie called The In Between in Atlanta. That's really exciting. Have you ever been? I've never been. That would be good. Never been. Yeah, so new places, always very, very interesting to me. And uh, a whole movie called West Side Story's coming out in December. We've had way too years, we shot that two years ago. It was supposed to come out this December, but then, you know, our global pandemic and that, so they delayed it so that it can come out in theaters this, this December around Christmas and my god, am I excited to see that film? Oh my god.

Young Hollywood

Do you think that you look a lot different than you did two years ago? So it's gonna be weird watching?

Kyle Allen

Um, I gotta look at pictures. No, actually. I've got some set photos of it right there. I don't think so. Similar hair too. Still the hair.

Young Hollywood

Still the hair. How was your hair back then compared to now?

Kyle Allen

It was the same. Nice. It was the same. It was about the I was about, it was about this length. It's a, it's a, it's a 1950s kinda swoosh. It looked better. I'm gonna be honest with you. It's fine. Life at home is just a little bit rough right now. It's totally fine.
