Dave Bautista & Kumail Nanjiani Reveal Weirdest Uber Rides & Talk Stuber

About this video
What do you get when you pair Dave Bautista with Kumail Nanjiani, and add a dog for good measure? Hilarity, that's what! As the pro wrestler known as Batista, Dave has built a career on his intensity, but with roles like Drax in the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movies, we got to see his more humorous side, which is put on full display in the buddy comedy 'Stuber' -- with the help of his co-star, comedian and Oscar-nominated writer Kumail! We catch up with the unlikely duo at SXSW in Austin where they are premiering the film to get the scoop on the wacky premise and what essentials they needed to get through spending a lot of time in a car together throughout filming! They also share their own real-life stories about odd Uber experiences, plus they reveal their favorite (spoiler-free) moments in the film, and Dave explains why LASIK surgery is not a good idea for someone in his line of work!

All right. Just so you know, I have the urge to drop the mic so bad right now. Just mic drop it at the end.
Okay. No, that ruins mics. I used to host a comedy show and people would like drop the mic and it ruins mics. They're like 70 bucks.
I did it last night on Raw and it was all cool.
Well that's cool. This is like the real me.
Yeah, you're the rig. I have been to Austin before. I've been to South by Southwest many times. This is my fifth or sixth time being here. It's kind of the most fun festival. And Austin's like an amazing city.
Yeah, it's amazing. I've been here many many many times throughout my wrestling career, film career but never to South by Southwest. This is my first time experiencing the festival.
Have you seen Six Street? You've seen Dirty Six.
What's Dirty Six? I don't know if I've seen Dirty Six.
They call Six Street like Dirty Six. That's where you find all the college kids like party. It gets really rowdy. Is madness. You should check it out if you can because it's a scene.
Nothing you've said makes me want to check it out.
Yeah, I don't really feel like it either. Maybe just from the hotel.
You will?
Yeah, no, I'll I have been to Dirty Six. It's a it's a mess out there.
I don't know if I've been there.
Do you like barbecue? Are you a big barbecue fan?
Yeah, of course. They got like the best brisket.
I like I like barbecue at first but then like five hours later. Right. When you're still burping. You're done with barbecue. The barbecue is not done with you.
Talk to me a little bit about Stuber. Tell me a little bit about the film. What is it about?
Go ahead.
No, you go ahead.
Okay, so it's a he is a cop who has been on this case for a long time. He's been trying to get this murderer drug dealer guy and uh he's had some false leads and so he's been kicked off the case. Nobody believes him anymore. And so he gets Lasik surgery and that's the day he gets the tip that this guy is going to be at this spot at this time. He calls for backup. Nobody believes him. So he calls an Uber driver. You that's where you come in.
That's me. That's when I come in.
Begrudgingly calls in. Yeah, he sort of forces me to go on this like Odyssey adventure to get this murderer, drug dealer, bad guy. I hold him hostage.
So you guys spend a lot of time in a car then, right?
Oh, yeah.
So you guys got to know each other pretty well.
Pretty well.
Was you guys have like road trip necessities?
Water, we had spray bottles a lot.
Well, it's a the movie. It's a little stuffy in there. It was a little literally it was loaded up like an Uber car. He was a well-prepared Uber driver.
Yeah, you're a good Uber driver.
Yeah, we had chocolates. We had gum. We had condoms.
Yeah. What are you getting into?
Ready for anything. Not nothing at that time. I was still married at that time. Nothing at that time.
What's your been like weird Uber drive that you guys have had?
Oh, I I get those guys who like will put on some music and they'll kind of be like grooving to it and then looking at me and then grooving and looking at me and they're like, do you like this song? I'm like, yeah, it's pretty good and they'll be like I made it. Like, oh, wow. Go check out my website. I'm not a record executive or anything. I can't do anything for you.
I've never had anything like crazy, but I did have a a funny reaction once. We got in an Uber driver, me and a buddy of mine. We're in Brooklyn and I think we're going over to Cleveland Park in Queens. And it was pretty late. We were actually going to I was showing a film, but I wasn't in the scene, but we were going over to visit. And so we get in the car, me and my buddy and we and we tell him, you know, we want to go over to Cleveland Park and he looks back at us. He goes a little bit late to be going to the park, isn't it?
What does that mean?
They're like, no, just just two guys going to the park.
Dave, I noticed your glasses. In the movie, you kind of call him up because you have Lasik surgery. Is that correct?
Yeah, yeah. The glasses right now similar. Yeah. We're actually just having this conversation because I'm I'm overdue for an eye surgery. I can't have Lasik though. I've heard it's bad for people who get knocked around. They can possibly just lose my Yeah. Yeah, they do another type of laser surgery that's safer, but otherwise uh Lasik wouldn't be good for people who get punched in the head a lot.
Wow. Was there like a favorite scene that you guys shot or a funny moment?
There is for me. I don't want to give it away.
Okay. Okay, yeah. I'm curious to see what his is. Let's see yours.
Well, I mean I can say it. Mine's a sporting goods store.
Uh-huh, yeah, mine too.
There's a great We have a great scene in a sporting goods store together that's just really I I really love this movie.
Go see it. Go ahead and tell the audience why this is going to be the summer comedy.
Funny as hell. It's really funny. It's got a lot of great action. It's moving. It's got the type of Sunny Denzil in it. It's got the type of Sunny Denzil in it. Um, it's got it's kind of it's funny and it's got heart and it's got it's a great story. It's a really good movie. It has great action. There's great car chases. O. Eko has from The Raid Redemption. He's so great in this film. He's the bad guy in it. The two of them have like a couple of great brawls. Hand-to-hand fights and no slips.
No slips.
No. Okay. No, no. Nobody really got hurt, but Eko's a he can move so fast. Like he'll do it and be like I know. He's amazing. Yeah, I remember they did one take and they were like, okay, the camera can't see that. So could you slow down your kick? They're like, all right, now kick. He's like, I already kicked.
Do we see you get into some action?
Some, but not like that.
Okay.
Not like that. It's pretty great though. When I kick, you could see that I kick. It's pretty great.
