About this video

They say "write what you know", and if there are two things that writer Diallo Riddle knows, it's being funny and his hometown of Chicago. His love for the South Side of the city combined with his creative talents is what lead to the Comedy Central series "South Side", which portrays the often misunderstood Chitown neighborhood in a new and joyful light. Diallo is joined by one of the stars of the series (and fellow native South Sider), Chandra Russell, at Viacom Press Day where Young Hollywood chats with them about how the show is similar to "Trailer Park Boys" and dispelling some myths about deep-dish pizza! Diallo and Chandra also send out a plea directly to none other than Chicago heroes Barack & Michelle Obama to make a special guest appearance in Season 2! Yes They Can!

Young Hollywood

What's going on guys? Hanging with me right now, I have Shandra and Diallo. Hello. From South Side. What's up?

Diallo

Oh, we're just, we're just hanging out in this, uh, you know, uh, suite that they, uh, this, this is a pretty sweet, suite at the hotel.

Shandra

Yeah. He's very clever.

Young Hollywood

We made this just for you guys. I know. But no, this is all about you guys. Congratulations on South Side. How does it feel?

Diallo

It feels amazing. Yeah. Just to to finish. Yeah, really. Yeah, because people don't realize like, you you you you pitch these projects like under one president and then, you know, like, many presidents later you actually get the chance to shoot a pilot and then a couple presidents later then you're like actually coming to air. But we when we when we pitched this idea, we knew that we wanted to do something about the city of Chicago. Right. And, uh, I think that in those intervening years, Chicago has only become more on everybody's radar. So the timing is actually better now than when I think we pitched it. So everything works out for a purpose.

Young Hollywood

Yeah. What can you tell the Young Hollywood audience about what your show's about?

Diallo

Bashir and I were always big fans of shows like Trailer Park Boys and just we we like a big, you know, grounded, but a big funny type TV show. And, uh, Bashir came and to me and he was like, what if we did Trailer Park Boys on the South Side, Chicago, where he grew up. And I was like, that sounds fantastic. So, uh, skip a couple of years later, we we shot a a a sizzle reel what they call in the business, like we shot like 10 minutes of what we thought might be good. And then we shot a an actual pilot and then this is every summer we were in Chicago, you know. And just last summer we finally got the chance to shoot 10 episodes of the show, which is really at its heart, it's it's a little bit like if Chicago were Springfield in the Simpsons, you know. You're going to meet all the you're going to meet the mayor, you're going to meet the guy who catches dogs for a living. Like you'll meet all the colorful characters in uh in this part of town. And one thing that let us know that we were on the right path was the fact that, you know, from our Uber driver to uh to people who just worked on set, who were like local to the neighborhood, everybody seemed to say, hey, y'all uh y'all making a a comedy about the South Side? Thank you. Thank you for showing this side because we feel like we have to always show the other side. Thank you for And by the way, we're big fans of all the Chicago shows. You know, Lena Waithe, The Chi, like that's an excellent show. I I personally, I I binge watch like Chicago Fire, Chicago, you know, dog catcher, all that stuff. Like I will watch any show about Chicago. So the fact that we get to be a part of that family now is really special.

Young Hollywood

Yeah. That is super cool. So is that kind of what inspired you to to jump on the project? Is that you know, you wanted to tell a story another story about Chicago?

Shandra

Um, well, definitely for me, the Chicago part was really important. I'm from Chicago, born and raised on the South Side. Um, and while we do like love all the great dramas that come out of there, you know, my life was hilarious growing up and everybody in Chicago thinks they are like the funniest person in the world and so, you know, we definitely wanted to show that Chicago is colorful, you know, and it has lots of different sides to it. So it was really important for us to be more than just the tragedy. Like we are fun people. Right.

Young Hollywood

Yeah. I've never been to Chicago, but I hear the deep dish pizza. Is that really a thing out there? Is it kind of just like a touristy thing?

Shandra

Let me say this one, okay? Listen, deep dish is a thing. Everyone deep dish is a thing, right? Okay. But we do eat more than just deep dish. Like I I feel like it's just pizza. Yes. Everyone thinks all we eat is deep dish is a block of food. Okay. Like, please.

Young Hollywood

So not lunch and dinner?

Shandra

Oh. If you eat deep dish, you're done for the day. Okay. That is a full meal. So, you know, it's for special occasions, you know, birthday, graduation, but usually, you know, you just get some regular Chicago style pizza.

Diallo

Can I tell you my deep dish story? So I go there and I'm like, I need I need official Chicago deep dish pizza. And I come across this place called Lou Malnati's, which I was like, wait, the Illuminati have a pizza stand? But then it turns out his name is Lou and his last name is Malnati.

Shandra

Still doesn't help.

Diallo

What are the odds of that? Yeah. Malnati's. I'm still suspicious. And I wasn't even pronouncing it right apparently. But it's very delicious. And, um, and I and our characters have their take on that too because like she said, it's not it's not like everywhere you go, like they they won't force you like if you ask for a thin crust pizza, they're they'll give you a thin crust pizza.

Young Hollywood

Okay, I was like, I won't be ashamed for that, right? I actually don't even really like thin crust that much. So, you know what? Deep dish sounds pretty bad.

Shandra

Sacrilege.

Young Hollywood

Big fan of thin crust. Okay, if you guys could have anyone guest star on the show with you, who would it be and why?

Diallo

I'd say, you know, maybe we would have Lil Rel on the show. Like he's such a funny guy, he's from Chicago. Wait. We did have him on the show this season. Oh, man. What? Did I miss something? Darn it. You know what? Maybe we would get like somebody like Earthquake, you know, like the stand-up or maybe um, Ed Lover. We got them too. I'm terrible at this. Hold on a second, let me pass the microphone.

Shandra

You're good at plugging it. Name drop, name drop. Um, I would probably say Dave Chappelle because that would be like super fun to work with him.

Diallo

Wait a second. We shot we shot at Hyde Park. We need the Obamas in season two. Oh my God, yes. We need the Obamas in season two. Michelle, yes. Michelle. Michelle, I know you binge watch Young Hollywood and so I'm just talking to you right now, okay? We're going to tweet this at her. Any craft services you desire. Yes, ma'am. We will provide. I will I will pay for it out of pocket. If you like those uh vanilla wafer cookies, done. You got it, boo. Come on, South Side. Come on, South Side. She's a South Side girl. What? I was just Yep. Of course he does. Of course he What a cool That's our producer off camera. You didn't hear us. I extend the same offer to you, okay? I will personally, I will pay for your Uber. I will Uber you. I will show up in my car. It won't be weird. Tell the tell tell the Secret Service to stand down. I will pick you up and take you safely to set. We'll give you some funny lines to say. We actually wrote for Barack Obama, uh, when we were writers of Fallon. Bashir and I used to write Slow Jam the News and Barack famously came on the show to Slow Jam the News with us. You know, they clear out the entire room and then like it's just me, Bashir and Jimmy just standing there like, you know, like, what's happening? And then like the door slams open and like 14 of the tallest guys you've ever seen in suits, like it's like the Men in Black. And then like right in the middle it's like Barack just like little bouncing and stuff and he's like, hey, Jimmy, looking forward to this. Like, I was just like, what is happening? And so we got to spend 15 minutes with Barack. He nailed his lines. The man has amazing comedic timing and, uh, I'm just saying like, you know, if you thought that was funny, wait till he's on season two of South Side. Now I'm looking for Michelle. Thank you. Michelle, I'm here for you, okay? Carry on.

Shandra

Bo. We'll we'll take Bo.

Young Hollywood

I would love that, honestly. We're going to root for that. We're going to tweet it at both the Obamas. Tag you guys. We're going to make it happen. Just give us some of the creds, you know, like invite us to the to the taping, you know, whatever.

Diallo

That's done. Hands down. Uh, Parlor Pizza in Chicago when you when you come. That by the way, this sounds like I got endorsed. I definitely did not. But, uh, that was actually my favorite pizza in town. It was like right by uh Soho House near the Loop.

Shandra

Okay. Well, you know, I'm a I'm a South Sider, so I'm a Italian Fiesta Girl. But to each his own.

Young Hollywood

All right, well. Okay, lastly, you guys, could you please describe your show in three facial expressions? I want you to look straight to camera and just go ahead and start. Whenever you're ready.

Diallo

We we we've definitely worked this out in advance. Right.

Shandra

Okay, okay, I'm ready.

Young Hollywood

Face one. Go. Face two. And now face three. You guys are amazing. Thank you so much for hanging out.

Shandra
