Actor Everett Osborne Reveals Fave NBA Team & Similarities With Sweetwater

I was I think point guard. PG? Yeah, but I was also a forward because I was in a really small school. So, I was like every position. Yeah. You know what? Somebody asked me today, "Oh, so Sweetwater was a power forward?" I said, "No, you know, during that time, you're just a basketball player, right?" I mean, he was big on just being able to play the game his way and just having the true skill set. So, I was like, he had no position. He was able to do it all. He was actually all of them. Yeah.

So, you were you were living through Sweetwater.

LA. LA native. I got to choose Lakers. I was thinking about that this morning, like when I was young, my dad painted my room purple and gold. And when I was on my hike this morning to bring it back, I saw a purple and yellow flower. And it was just like an omen to me like, wow, okay, we're in the right space where it's supposed to be. So purple and yellow just means something different, but yeah, Lakers. Dan says to you. It was the Lakers.

Did you have to play basketball in the audition process before you got the part?

Great question. Okay, I missed that I missed out about that. Yeah. So to shoot. Yeah. They said must have great basketball ability, right? Yeah. So after I did the first, well, the first audition was me doing one scene. And then the other part of that was they needed to see me on the court. So I had to do a full basketball audition. I had my uncle go to the gym.

Were you nervous? I mean, you're good at basketball, so.

Well, I during that time, I just studied how they play back then. And I was like, where's my Chuck Taylors? Like, I got some black Chucks. Put those on. I went to Amazon, order me some little shorts. Got those shorts. Came the next day. Next day delivery, boom. And then I just pulled up to the gym and it was crazy because I wasn't training for basketball, but it felt like I was. Yeah. I literally was making 10 shots in a row. I was ducking in Chucks. It felt like I was training, but I wasn't. It's just crazy. I think my body is just ready.

You just knew.

Yeah, it was just coming to me. You're going to get the role. You're about everything everything was. Well, I think like when you prepare for something, Yeah. Sometimes you don't have to micromanage the hard work you put in, especially when you put in so much work. I think life has a good good way of just bringing everything to fruition at the right time. And it was just that moment.

Do you find yourself more similar or different to Sweetwater?

Well, there I'm definitely different. Yeah. But I did find a couple keys that are similar. When I was doing my research, I saw a video of him as an older man driving a taxi cab in Chicago. And he was just talking about and he didn't even make it a point. I just kind of caught it. And he said that he wished the NBA was able to really see what he could have done. You know, he didn't feel like his game or his full potential ever really got a chance to fully be exposed on on on on the largest platform. Yeah. And I I related to that. He was also talking about, you know, him being benched because he wasn't they didn't want him to outshine the other players as the other players or anything like that.

So I I relate to, you know, feeling like you have like all these gifts and stuff inside of you. And like you know you're meant to do something, but then there's like no platform to really exercise that and life is showing you that Yeah. There's no way for you to make it happen. So I related to that for sure.

Do you you went to Australia to play professional basketball?

I played professional in Australia. I did, yeah.

Okay, so I definitely made my my dream come true as far as playing part. I was going to say, do you how are you happy with how it turned out? Oh my god. Or do you wish that you did go to the NBA?

No, I'm like I'm so happy how it turned out. Um, and it's still actually turning out as we're talking. But just to see how one seed of basketball of like one goal or dream I had, I put love into it. I put my all into it. And to see like what that true what that tree has brought me and grown into, it's the most fulfilling thing. Because it's way beyond my performance on the court now. Yeah. Like it's grown into something that I couldn't even dream about.

And you are like technically this movie representing basketball.

Yeah, my my goal with ball, I always just wanted to be like, you know, I used to pray like, God, please just, you know, allow me to use this platform, you know, for a greater cause. I always just cared about people and human connection. That's that's me to my essence beyond the basketball player, beyond the actor. I just care about humans, right? Like that's always been a thing for me. So, I feel like that was answered with just where life is at right now, where it's going. Yeah.

That's so sick.

Okay, well, that was our shooter shoot segment with um with Sweetwater and the cat. I picked up this on accident though. Okay. What does it say? It says, "What do you hope people take from this movie?" That'd be a good way to end it. So, look right there. Okay, what do I hope? What do you hope people take from this movie?

I think inspiration, you know. This movie's going to touch kids, older folks, people from uh a myriad of of diaspora of people. So, I just hope people are inspired, walk in there with an open heart. And I'm sure you guys will leave different than you came.

If people wore your jersey like a sweetwater jersey or like your personal jersey, have they done that?

Yeah, well, you know, no, people haven't worn my personal jersey, but we actually went to New York recently. There's like a sweetwater award for the community we gave out. And there was like a number eight NYX sweetwater jersey that I've never seen in my life. Yeah. Right? And it was so beautiful to see it. And they had me sign it and to the kids. And I was like, dang. Am I going to be signing more of these jerseys in a while? So, I think we do have New York NYX sweetwater jerseys on the way. Yeah. I do.
