Beyond the Athlete: L.A. Kings's Dustin Brown

Hey there young Hollywood. I'm Tatiana Diana and we have a special treat for you today. We're going to spend an extremely exciting day with L. A. Kings, Dustin Brown.

Hi, I'm Tatiana, nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you. This is my house.

So, you want to show us around?

Yeah, we'll, uh, we'll go upstairs first. My older son's room. Uh, Jake.

Oh, I love this. So, this is where he sleeps, big boy bed.

He's two and a half, he's starting to get to that point where he's, hopefully getting potty trained here soon. This is just my other kid's room, uh, Mason. My wife decorates everything so Pottery Barn, or something along those lines. This is my room.

Oh. So, if we were on MTV Cribs right now, we'd say, "This is where the magic happens."

This is where the magic happens. Yes. It's really just sleeping here. We're downstairs most of the time. Um, I'll show you my bathroom cuz that's probably my favorite part.

Yeah, it's nice and big. Walk-in shower. You could give the whole team a shower in there.

Pretty much, yeah. That's, like I said, one of my favorite parts. That and my closet.

Yeah. This is an amazing closet.

Yeah, we re-did this when we bought the house. It wasn't like this. So, this is the one thing we kind of, who takes more of the closet, you or your wife? Right now, me but that's just, I can see that. I have all the business, all the suits, so that's, I have to wear suits every game.

It looks like a magazine.

Yeah, that's what, that's what she wanted. She wanted to look, you know, look into our house and look like a Pottery Barn magazine. Like no one lives here. This is how it's been since we've gotten here. Normally there's there's piles of stuff here. We kind of converted it to like a home gym cuz I need to work out. It's something I've always, I don't always feel like going to the rink, or going to the gym. So, I can just maybe come in here for an hour or two when I don't feel like leaving the house. This is our, uh, formal dining room. It's a little messy because we just re-did our office, so there's some office stuff out here. Uh, we eat here for Christmas, Thanksgiving, that's about it. We got a couple computers. Me and my wife. She's on the phone doing stuff, I'm on the computer doing stuff. So, it's also where we watch most of our TV. All my gaming systems are here. I haven't touched them in a while, but I play video games.

So, we're in the room that you hang out the most, let's play some video games. Is this your favorite game?

Uh, I like Guitar Hero, but my favorite, probably, uh, Call of Duty.

Do you play any hockey games?

Uh, yeah. I have uh, NHL 2K and NHL EA Sports NHL. You know, growing up, I always played video games, you'd always have to create your player. So, it's kinda cool to be able to go into a game and just play yourself like right out of the package. That's pretty cool. Um, so my rating's not as good as I'd like. So, I'm gonna try to talk to EA this year about getting me a better rating.

So, you were the captain of the Olympic team as well, right?

Uh, I was an alternate captain.

And that's pretty amazing.

Yeah. Very exciting.

You're so young.

Uh, it was exciting just being a part of it and then to be named, and just to be captain was definitely a big, big honor. This my silver medal from the Winter Olympics just uh, up in Vancouver and it's, I'll let you hold it. Everyone doesn't realize how heavy it is.

Oh my god. It's so heavy. So, we finally made it to your favorite place in the house. For a special reason?

Yeah, I uh, Chef Dustin. Well, not quite. Uh, I like making pizza, homemade pizza. So, this is all dough, that's, you'll see. But, uh, I prepared that this morning, it has to rise. So, I got all my ingredients out. You wanna help?

Yes.

Yeah, here. Pat it. Pat it.

So, if you retired one day, do you think you'll open a pizzeria?

No, it's too much work.

The Dustin Brown No. Franchise.

No. Pizza's fun, but I don't think I'd wanna do it for a living.

And more garlic butter?

More garlic, yeah. Garlic, you can't go wrong with garlic. You can't go wrong with anything with butter in it.

So, the moment of truth. We're gonna try your pizza and see if your pizzas are as good as they seem. Cheers?

Mmm. All right, so this is the moment we have been waiting for. For you to throw the first pitch at the Dodger's game. Are you pumped?

I'm a little pumped, a little nervous. I've done it before, so I I'll try to bring my experience into throwing a strike this time.

So, obviously, you're a sports fanatic. Do you love baseball?

Yeah, I grew up playing it, watching it. I was a huge, uh, Yankees fan. I came out here, I obviously liked the Dodgers quite a bit. I'm more of a Dodger's fan than I am an Angel's fan, so.

So, you love the Dodger's now?

I love the Dodger's. Of course I love the Dodger's.

If you were to play baseball, what position would you play?

Uh, catcher. Uh, that's what I played growing up and you're involved every play, every pitch. So, that's always fun for me.

The first pitch at the Dodger's game. What'd you do to prepare?

Uh, I went through my mental routine. No, I'm just kidding. No, I just came here, had a good time. I did a few, uh, a few things with some of the players and um, it's getting closer now to throw my first pitch out and, uh, you see the stadium's starting to fill up and I'll just go out there and try to throw a strike.

Well, I think you've found your second calling in life. You threw a strike.

Uh, yeah. I had uh, I had to shake off uh, my catcher a few times, he had bad pitch selection, but I finally found the pitch I liked and, uh, delivered one.

Well, you have a big event to get ready for tonight. I'm gonna let you go and we'll catch up with you there. So, we meet again. What's up?

I'm out here just trying to enjoy the party.

Are you having fun?

Yeah, I was a little nervous coming in. Just this is my party and, um, but it's been, it's turned out great and I'm just, just excited to be here.

Had that nervous moment of like, is anyone gonna show up to my party?

More or less, yeah. I had nothing to do with it so they kept on saying how great it's gonna be and, um, you know, it's turned out pretty good. I was nervous coming though.

So, I know you work with a lot of charities. Do you wanna tell us some of the charities you work with?

Right now, Kaboom. Uh, I think we're just finishing up, uh, what we're gonna do with them and it's, we're kinda building a playground. Get the, get the kids out, outdoors and playing.

Well, we had such a blast hanging out with you. We loved your family. We had a blast making pizza. Going to the Dodger's game. You have such an incredible life and we know that you have so much more in store for you. We wish you the best of luck and sorry for annoying you for the past day.
