Young Hollywood

Hey guys, it's Tracy Bear with Young Hollywood and we are at South by Southwest. Finally, it's a beautiful day in Austin. I mean, thank God, it's been pouring rain all weekend. So it's sunny, it's gorgeous. And you guys, we got Brandon T. Jackson, Lucy De Vito, Tyler LaBine, and Cat Deley. I mean, how have you just been having a great time here? This is the whole. This is your first time in Austin or?

Brandon T. Jackson

Yeah. Great times, great times. Really great.

Tyler LaBine

Yeah.

Brandon T. Jackson

Qtie's uh, Brandon was rap rapping in a studio last night.

Tyler LaBine

Yeah, I ended up in a studio rapping. I might even be a rapper. No.

Brandon T. Jackson

That's how that's how great of times. That's how that's how you can.

Young Hollywood

We're going to get into the story. I feel like there's a story behind this.

Tyler LaBine

It's too long. It's definitely. The short version. The short version, I went to the Xbox party, met some people who were techies and they're like, "Yo, dude, you should come rap." I said, "I'm not Childish Gambino, but I'll try." And next thing you know, I was rapping in the studio for till 4:00 in the morning. And now we're here. In Austin style. We're in here and just rock.

Young Hollywood

So is it recorded? Can we hear it?

Tyler LaBine

It was no, it was just all fake. Yeah. It was all fake.

Brandon T. Jackson

Don't give him that mic. He'll start again.

Young Hollywood

We're doing. So we're with the cast of Deadbeat. That was a good intro. So, I mean this is cool because you guys are, you know, this is a television show, but you're the only like digital show sort of at South by, right? How is that? What what sort of made you, you know, want to be at South by premiere it?

Cat Deeley

Well, for me, I've never ever been uh to a festival before. So this is all. This is all a brand new experience for me because this is the first time I've ever done anything like this. So last night we all went out for dinner. I was saying to Tyler, what exactly do we do? Because I've got no idea at all.

Tyler LaBine

It's party. That's what we do.

Cat Deeley

That's that's what he said to me. And I was like, but I'm really nervous about people seeing it and watching and me being in the same room as them. But I have to say, it seems like a really great vibe here. Like everything is going on and we got back to the hotel last night. There were tons of people in the bar and it's there's just music acts and film and TV and of course us as well and it's it's great to be a part of.

Tyler LaBine

Cat Cat actually didn't know that we should attend the screening. I of our own show. She was like, "Well, what are you gonna be doing?" I was like, "Uh, I'm gonna be watching the show. I'm gonna be watching the show." She was like, "Oh, we go to that? I don't I don't really want to. I'm not going to want to sit there and watch myself on a giant screen." He's like, "No, you have to." With like a bunch of people. I'm like, "Oh my God."

Cat Deeley

You have to and you'll love it. Okay, I will. I will love it. I mean, come on.

Young Hollywood

Yeah, cuz you're you're your background is a host. So, is this your first like scripted series?

Cat Deeley

Yeah, proper, proper. Yeah. I've done cameos on other things like on the House of Lies and Life's Too Short and stuff like that. But um, yeah, this is my first proper, proper grown-up, grow-up acting thing to do. Yeah. But it's so different for me, you know. I'm used to on So You Think You Can Dance. It's live and you're in the moment and if you mess up, you make a joke of it and you get on with it and hopefully it endears you to the audience, but it's done. You know, we go live at 5:00, we're done by 7:00, we're having dinner at 8:00. And I certainly don't go home and watch it. So I this is very strange for me. To have to sit there and actually physically watch myself live huge. It's wrong.

Tyler LaBine

I wish we had footage of just Cat's experience at South by.

Cat Deeley

I quite point yeah. I'm like this all time. Just pretend I'm not here. Just go to my hair.

Young Hollywood

So, it's sort of a supernatural comedy, you know, your character is So what is it? Your business is unfinished business of ghosts. Yeah. So how do you explain your relationship with ghosts?

Tyler LaBine

Well, I'll I'll I'm gonna I'm gonna actually quote something from the show that was taken out of the edit, which I always thought should be back in there from the pilot. Is that finishing ghosts' unfinished business is literally my business. And I say like, if that ghost's last problem on Earth was shellacking their furniture, I would be helping them finish their unfinished finish. Basically, whatever whatever a ghost sort of their their last worldly concern is.

Brandon T. Jackson

We're kicking people out.

Tyler LaBine

No, no, no, no. It's like if you okay, if you if you died this morning and the last thing you had to do was this interview and you're like, "Oh, shoot. I died. I I It's really eating me that I didn't get to finish that interview." You would probably haunt this place until a guy like Kevin Pegli, my character would find you or stumble upon you, and you would ask him in a very ghostly manner to help you finish this one last thing that you you never got to do. And that's what he does.

Young Hollywood

So you actually put yourself in their shoes and you sort of do what they do.

Tyler LaBine

I do. Yeah, I basically in whatever way it's always different from case to case. It varies. Uh, but you know.

Young Hollywood

What's some of the craziest business you've had to finish?

Tyler LaBine

Oh. Can I say uh I had to fuck an old lady on there. Can we say that? I fuck an old lady. Uh and liked it. Yeah, I did like it. Yeah.

Lucy De Vito

What's the more finished where they go? The woohoo.

Tyler LaBine

We uh I have had to I've been put in some very uncomfortable positions, to say the least. Like in the show and in my real life.

Lucy De Vito

That's so funny.

Young Hollywood

Do you sort of done like the comedy horror thing in the past, right? So how is this a fresh take from what you've sort of done?

Brandon T. Jackson

For me, I'm a drug dealer in the film, in the in the show.

Lucy De Vito

Best friend.

Brandon T. Jackson

Yeah, the best friend slash, you know, so it's like, but the thing is my character's name is Rufy. And the thing about him is it's he's like a smarter version of He's not your typical street drug dealer. He's lives in downtown um and he's a hipster, you know, he's like, uh, you know, he sets up news stands around the city to pretty much deal his drugs and watch it and whatever like he comes through, you know, uh Rufy like when it's, you know, stuff is going down and then Rufy, they kind of through the season they become closer and closer and they go on journeys together where, you know, he sees what, you know, Kevin does.

Tyler LaBine

I bring him into the fold. Into the world.

Brandon T. Jackson

Yeah. Yeah. He looks confused most of the time. Yeah, I'm like, what are you doing? Who are you talking to? You don't see the ghosts. You're the only one who sees them. I never only only Packy only um Tyler's character sees the ghost. So, you know, it's kind of like it's cool because you have to play off of it where you're you're like looking the other way and he's the only one that can see the ghost. So you have to make sure you're acting where you're not looking at the actor that's there, which, you know, he's supposed to, you know, a regular actor is supposed to see the actor and you know.

Young Hollywood

Make eye contact.

Brandon T. Jackson

Yeah, right. Make eye contact.

Tyler LaBine

So, you know, I have to do in the show regularly because we shoot plate shots, they're called, where the there's one where it's me with an actor who's playing the ghost. And then they're like, "Okay, just sort of remember where he was." And then he leaves and I shoot the whole scene with nobody. Nobody there.

Lucy De Vito

Tyler does a lot of talking to himself.

Tyler LaBine

Talk to myself a lot. And then they later they through the magic of television, they uh they insert that actor back in and uh you know, it's seamless. For the viewer, not for the participant.

Young Hollywood

And it's going to be on Hulu, so you guys have to check it out. April 9th.

Tyler LaBine

April 9th on Hulu.
