WOMEN WE LOVE: Julia Michaels

Written by Rebecca Breitfeller. Published: May 06 2021

It’s no secret that pop music dominates the radio, and if you’ve tuned into your local radio station anytime in the past few years, there’s no doubt you’ve heard a Julia Michaels song. Her lyrical style is pretty hard to miss, even if it’s not her voice on the track. Michaels has worked with all of our favorite artists, from Selena Gomez to Ed Sheeran to Gwen Stefani, plus tons more!

After meeting some of her more frequent writing partners like Justin Tranter and Lindy Robbins, Michaels quickly became a writing machine. Her songs started getting pitched to huge artists like Justin Bieber and Fifth Harmony, and after a while, it was hard to find a chart-topping song that she wasn’t credited on. Her inability to say no to collaborations over the years gave her a new appreciation for her creative capacity, but now, Julia Michaels is in full control and finding her footing within the industry.

She has been writing and co-writing for other artists for nearly a decade, but now Julia Michaels is ready to emotionally bare it all and has so graciously given us her very own album of work. Her debut album Not In Chronological Order, which dropped on April 30th, is an amalgam of lyrics that point to the weird and vulnerable parts of being in love, and catchy synth-pop tunes that are sure to be on repeat all Summer long! Queen of pop doesn’t even begin to describe Julia, and her distinct writing style continues to lend itself to some truly amazing concepts on this album.

Following her hit “Issues” in 2017, Michaels has continued to pen emotionally vulnerable songs, even though it may not have always been so easy for her. She recently told Vulture, “It took me a long time to feel comfortable with people potentially relating to things that I was talking about.”

As you can tell, these heartfelt, jam-packed songs have quickly become her "thing", and we are all about it. As a young girl, Michaels wrote a lot of poetry, but once she realized the power behind her words and what she could do, songwriting became the next natural occurrence in her creative world -- and boy are we glad!

Since 2017, Julia has released a handful of great singles and a few EPs, which have all had a great blend of catchy pop beats as well as painfully honest lyrics that often feel like a small peek into her life. Over the past few years, she has continued collaborating with other artists while simultaneously longing to find her own voice, and we think she’s finally done it with this newest project. There is a sense of maturity and immense growth on this record, especially with songs like “Little Did I Know”, where we hear Michaels explain all the ways in which she thought love would pan out in her life until all of a sudden she found herself in a beautiful and life-changing relationship.

Other songs like “All Your Exes” pose a very tongue-in-cheek look at what it means to truly love all aspects of a person. Julia does not shy away from writing about the not-so-glamorous parts of love as well, and it’s no doubt what makes her music feel so genuine and relatable to her audience.

Make sure to grab your tissues and go stream EVERY single song! We definitely will be.
