What's Next For The 'Fear Street' Series?!
[Warning: Mild Spoilers Below!]
Director Leigh Janiak is thinking way beyond her recent Netflix horror trilogy Fear Street. She envisions an entire universe built on the series by author R.L. Stine (a ‘Fear Street’ Cinematic Universe, if you will). We’re talking standalone films, TV series, and even more sagas. Janiak’s vision came to light after the success of Fear Street: Part One-1994, Part Two-1978, and Part 3-1666, which Netflix released on June 28th, July 8th, and July 16th, respectively. While the teen slasher trilogy served us everything we could possibly want (who doesn’t love lesbian couples and horror?), we still can’t wait for this anticipated cinematic universe and the endless possibilities the future holds for it!
Here are just some possibilities we'd love to see come to light!
A Killer-of-the-Week Series
Janiak said that, in the original script for Fear Street, the Humpty Dumpty Killer was one of the main murderers wreaking havoc in Shadyside. He kills people, takes their assorted body parts, and sews them together to create new people, “putting things back together again.” Absolutely stomach-churning. I love it. Although we didn’t see the Humpty Dumpty Killer in the trilogy, Janiak said she’d love to explore the other possible murderers and take viewers on a deep dive into their unsettling backstories. Let me tell you -- I’d binge that Netflix series in a bloody, sewn-together heartbeat.
Shadyside vs. Sunnyvale
For centuries, the curse that loomed over the town of Shadyside created an intense rivalry between it and Sunnyvale, the neighboring town on the better side of the tracks where everything is prettier, nicer, more snooty, and crime-free. Now that the curse on Shadyside has lifted (thanks to Deena and Sam), it might be interesting to explore how Sunnyvale could be affected and how it would change the dynamic of the towns’ rivalry.
Fear Street Cheerleaders
R.L. Stine published a series within the Fear Street book series, Fear Street Cheerleaders, which follows two sisters who want desperately to be cheerleaders at Shadyside High, but once they join the squad, terribly gruesome things start happening to the team and each cheerleader is picked off one by one. There is absolutely nothing I love more than cheerleading paired with murder, and I could only imagine how good a series or 5-film saga (one for each book) would be. BETTER YET -- imagine incorporating the Shadyside/Sunnyvale rivalry while Sam is still on the Sunnyvale cheer team! I just gave myself chills.
Stay tuned!
