TV FROM AROUND THE WORLD: "The Rain" (Denmark)

Written by Devon Forward. Published: August 23 2019

Who doesn’t love a good post-apocalyptic drama? Because we do! And apparently so does Denmark, because they created the show “The Rain” with Netflix, which just released its 2nd season. It’s got everything you could ask for: action, family drama, doomed love, and even a cult! What more could you want?

When the world suddenly becomes toxic and the touch of rain will kill you, a pair of siblings, Simone and her younger brother Rasmus, start seeing their friends dying in front of them. Their parents rush and take them to a hidden bunker owned by their father’s company, Apollon. He forces them to stay there, and makes them promise not to go outside or open the door to anyone but him.

He says he’s going to look for a cure, hinting that his company had a hand in this disaster, and has one last message for Simone: protect Rasmus, because he might just be the key to all of this. Not long before this, Rasmus got really sick, and thanks to an experimental procedure from Apollon, he survived.

Fast forward 6 years later, Simone and Rasmus are getting tired of their boring, enclosed life. Dad hasn’t returned, and they have no clue what’s happened to the world over all these years. Rasmus, who was very young when the initial disaster happened, is so tired of being cooped up and naive to the dangers that he dares to go outside.

What the siblings find surprises them: the rain is still toxic, but there are survivors, and they are actively looking for a cure. The siblings decide to join this mismatched group of young men and women, hoping that maybe they can find their father and some answers to why this all happened.
