Our 5 Favorite Summer TikTok Trends!

Written by Dalila Bevab. Published: August 04 2020

In the summer of 2013, everyone was obsessed with Vine (Remember that app? Yeah, we feel old, too!), but in 2020, TikTok is the hot new thing. We’re all guilty of scrolling endlessly through our “For You" page for hours and hours, but for good reason. There are thousands of talented creators on TikTok who accidentally kickstart trends and challenges that spread like wildfire, and here are our 5 favorite TikTok trends of the summer!

1. The Vogue Challenge

We all have to admit it, there are some genetically blessed people on TikTok, and the perfect trend to highlight the future supermodels of the world (including you!) is the #VogueChallenge, where you take high quality pictures from your phone and edit in Vogue’s front cover art to make it look like you’re a high fashion god/goddess gracing our eyes! If you’re not up for breaking a sweat by learning complicated dance moves, this trend is super easy and fun to do at the same time.

2. The Wipe It Down Challenge

Marilyn Monroe once said, “If you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best,”, meaning we all have good and bad days for our appearance, and the #WipeItDown challenge shows our glow-up transformations in a humorous, modern way. The trend consists of a few frames: a rough-looking shot, then you wipe down a “dirty” mirror, change into your “new you” look, wink or shoot a cheeky smile at the camera, and then wipe down the mirror again showing you in your original form, looking shook as heck! The challenge became popular in late-May, probably because we’ve all gotten so used to chilling in our PJs and fuzzy slippers that we need a reminder of ourselves looking snazzy.

3. Reciting the “Sofia the First” Theme Song

Some of us may be too old to know what the Disney animated TV show "Sofia the First" is about, but TikTok loves to make us feel old at times! A trend that really popped off this summer was where people post videos with compilations of attractive celebrities, delicious food, favorite movies, etc., and ask users to “duet” the video by singing along to the theme song from "Sofia the First" if they found something attractive or yummy. It might sound silly at first, but it’s a super cute and hilarious trend that brings out the best of us, and by that, we mean the thirst in us! If you tell us to sing along if we find One Direction attractive, we’ll bust out the Beyoncé-worthy high notes that’ll give Miss Sofia run for her money!

4. Dancing to Jason Derulo's “Savage Love”

Jason Derulo is known for putting out unforgettable chart-topping music, but did you know he’s also a TikTok star? No, seriously. Jason has amassed a following of 30.2 million followers and over 589 million likes on his goofy, well-produced videos. We’re happy he’s able to show off more of his creative side, but his true legacy on TikTok is his “Savage Love” song that went viral early this summer. It became popular by a simple dance where you sway your hips side to side and do some funky thing with your hands, in typical TikTok fashion, of course! There are over 3.5 million videos that have used the song, and all we can say is, “Ja-son De-RU-looo!”

5. Diamonds and Pearls, oh we wish!

Like we said before, there are some beautiful people on TikTok, and they don’t shy away from the camera! One of the recent trends is cross-generational and includes videos where younger, attractive people appear in front of the camera in the beginning singing, dancing, or smiling along to “He likes my diamonds and my pearl” with a caption saying something like, “OMG! Your children are beautiful!” and then a parent or parents appear, smiling and saying, “I said, thank you, I designed it.” The trend is a fun way for kids to make their parents feel more hip and cooler, and brings more attention to the wholesome family side of TikTok!

The summer isn’t over yet, which means there are endless possibilities as to what new trends or challenges might go viral on TikTok, but we’ll definitely be one of the first people to see what’s new and popping on the app!
