Breaking Down the Latest 'Star Wars VII' Trailer!

Written by Sarah Osman. Published: October 20 2015

Last night was a first for many nerds: they actually watched a football game. But it was for a very good reason -- it was because the Force was awakened!

During last night’s Monday Night Football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants, the Jedis briefly took over halftime as the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered. To add to the Star Wars glee, tickets for the film immediately went on sale and instantly sold out in many theatres. It looks like the Force was quite strong.

In the meantime, while we all eagerly await for the film to land in theaters on December 18 (or, if you did manage to get tickets, December 17), let’s take a look at the epic trailer:

Whoa!! That was a lot to take in. Give me a second to catch my breath...

Okay, SO. That trailer gave us a bit more information than the last few. We can now tell that Star Wars: The Force Awakens definitely takes place quite a few years after Return of the Jedi, and it looks as though Princess Leia and Han Solo (Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford) are still happily together (yay!), and so are Han Solo and his side piece Chewbacca (of course they are -- what could break those buddies up?). We also had a more formal introduction to Rey (Daisy Ridley), whom we can presume to be a heroine. It looks like the adorable soccer ball-esque droid, BB-8, is her trusty robot sidekick (is he possible connected to R2-D2? He does show up in the trailer!) and that she appears to be a scavenger. She certainly looks like she kicks butt, as throughout the trailer she fires a gun and takes on a bunch of stormtroopers.

Speaking of stormtroopers, it looks like our hero will indeed be a former stormtrooper. Finn, played by John Boyega, appears to abandon the dark side to join the good guys -- and might even become a Jedi? He does wield an impressive blue lightsaber against the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) later in the trailer.

As for this baddie, Kylo Ren looks like a formidable match for our heroes. He grips Darth Vader’s delipidated mask (where did he find that?) and he even sounds a bit like Vader. Was there a third lost kid that Anakin Skywalker had? Could Kylo Ren possibly be Luke’s long-lost brother? We’ll just have to find out!

The trailer didn’t reveal where Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) was in all this, nor who or what Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Lupita Nyong’o will be playing. Hopefully another trailer will be released before the movie comes out!

What are your theories regarding the new Star Wars trailer?
