If you haven’t heard of Beabadoobee by now, you’ve missed some incredible music. Not only is she incredibly talented and successful, but she just released her third studio album, and she’s only 24.

Beatrice Kristi Laus, or Bea, has been releasing music since 2018. She has since released 6 non-album singles, 5 EPs, and 3studio albums. Needless to say, she’s doing pretty well. Born in the Philippines and rained in West London, Beabadoobee grew up listening to '90s rock music. She played the violin throughout grade school but decided to pick up a guitar one day and start learning how to play from YouTube videos; she slowly began developing her iconic sound. Being heavily inspired by artists like Mazzy Star, Elliot Smith, Simon & Garfunkel, and Pavement, just to name a few, Bea creates indie pop/rock alternative music. Her soft, soprano voice and more upbeat, rock-inspired production make her stand out in the pop-rock genre. Bea’s music is similar to that of artists like Avril Lavigne, with the contrast of her voice to that of punky production.

In 2017, Bea released her first original song, “Coffee,” along with a cover of “The Moon Song” from the movie Her. After “Coffee” amassed over 300,000 views on YouTube, she was signed to an indie record label, Dirty Hit Records, in April of 2018. She has since skyrocketed her way into mainstream success. She went on to release her first EP titled Lice.

She went on to release her first EP titled Lice and several other EPs with Dirty Hits. In 2019, she opened for Clairo on her tour for her album Immunity. Bea began to gain an audience and fandom from this tour. “Coffee” ended up trending again, but this time on TikTok after a sample was used in Powfu’s song “Death Bed”. The Canadian rapper’s song rose to massive success, becoming one of the most trending songs on the app. The song remains one of her most-streamed songs on Spotify, with over 1 billion streams!

Her newest album, This is How Tomorrow Moves, features a variety of sounds and genres of songs. Following the release of “Glue Song” and “That’s the Way Things Go”, Bea was unsure of what direction to take for the overall theme of this album. However, while covering a wide range of emotions and types of production, her songs still work beautifully together within the album.

Bea’s newest album truly stands out from her past two, namely in the production. Her song "A Cruel Affair" begins with retro folk chords in the intro, and her voice glides with the incredible production.  The album is very reminiscent of early-2000s pop-rock music, while not as punky as her previous album Beatopia, with songs like “Talk” or “10:36”. Bea stays true to herself with her upbeat indie-rock backtracks and slow emotional ballads sprinkled throughout the record.

Some other stand-out songs include "Beaches", "California", and an online favorite, "This is How It Went", an extension of “The Way Things Go”, a song she wrote about a past relationship that ended.

Not only can Bea’s storytelling skills shine from these two songs, but her emotion truly shines through. Bea’s records can never truly fit in one box or one genre; her music is simply too honest to sound the same in every song. The evolution of her music has only become more genuine as she has gained support through the years. Her music is fun, heartbreaking, and unbelievably raw.
