5 Celebrity LGBTQ+ Allies We're Grateful For!

Written by Dalila Bevab. Published: June 11 2020

June marks LGBTQ+ Pride Month—a commemorative month of celebrations to honor the achievements and accomplishments of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community that has overcome incredible adversity. The month-long series of events includes parades, festivals, and marches, but of course virtual events will replace the fun in-person celebrations due to COVID-19 and social distancing restrictions (we’re really disappointed about that!).

We’ve compiled a list of publicly heterosexual celebrities who have long been allies of the LGBTQ+ community and who use their platform to show the world that love is love, which makes us love them even more!

Watermelons aren’t the only sweet thing about Harry Styles. The “Watermelon Sugar” singer has openly supported the LGBTQ+ community throughout his time in the spotlight with One Direction and as a solo artist, most notably waving the Pride flag at his shows. He embodies his own saying of “Treat People With Kindness”, and at a show in 2017, he said, "Every single one of you tonight -- if you are black, if you are white, if you are gay, if you are straight, if you are transgender. Whoever you are, whoever you wanna be. I support you. I love every single one of you."

When he’s not jumping around burning cars on stage and blowing fans away with his impressive rapping skills, Twenty-One Pilots singer Tyler Joseph openly supports the LGBTQ+ community. He waves the Pride flag on occasion at concerts, showing that he loves and supports all of his fans no matter their identity, and we’re here for it.

On the first day of Pride Month, he tweeted, "happy pride month to all, but mostly to my brothers and sisters I've met all around this world who should know, I take pride in your courage. it ain't easy."

3. Ariana Grande

Queen Ari does not shy away from pouring love and support toward her LGBTQ+ fans, which makes us love her so much more! Ariana shocked everyone when she displayed the rainbow Pride flag during her Coachella set in 2019 because of the organization’s anti-LGBTQ+ controversies. It was an iconic moment for Ariana fans, whose idol isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes in—a true queen. "To my gay fans, I love you so much, and to my fans who aren't out of the closet yet -- to my babes who are shy about it -- I love you, and you do not have to rush," Ariana said at a concert in 2016.

What’s not to love about everyone’s favorite pop girl group? They too have waved the rainbow Pride flag at shows to show support, especially when performing “Secret Love Song Pt. II,” a song fans consider to be an LGBTQ+ anthem. The lyrics, “Why can’t I hold you in the street? Why can’t I kiss you on the dance floor? I wish that it could be like that / Why can’t it be like that? ‘Cause I’m yours,” highlighting the struggle many LGBTQ+ community members face when not being able to freely love who they want because of social stigmas. The girls took a big step in showcasing their support when they displayed the Pride flag during their performance last year in Dubai, where homosexuality is considered to be illegal.

Little Mix are also vocal about their support for the community on social media. In 2018, the group account tweeted: “To all of our LGBTQ+ fans...we LOVE you for who you are and are born to be,” to which a fan replied with, “you [gave] me the courage to come out to my family and accept who I am ️??????” It goes to show how big of an impact straight allies can have when they use their platform to support and promote LGBTQ+ rights and social acceptance.

5. Timothée Chalamet

Okay, I know your heart skipped a beat when you read that name because tbh, he has that effect on everyone! But just when you thought that man couldn’t get any more perfect, he does! The Little Women actor gained fame when he played a bisexual character in the 2017 movie Call Me by Your Name, which was a hugely important film that provided mainstream representation for the LGBTQ+ community.

Our favorite heartthrob also donated $1,000 to New York City’s LGBTQ Community Center, an organization that helps support and celebrate LGTBQ members in the city. He previously contributed to the same center and other anti-sexual assault organizations when he announced he planned to donate his salary from Woody Allen’s movie A Rainy Day in New York. Timothée truly has a heart of gold; how can you not love him? [*swoon*]

These five celebrities are role models for the rest of the allies in how they should support the LGBTQ+ community, so follow Harry’s lead and don’t forget to “Treat People With Kindness”! Although the circumstances surrounding this year’s Pride Month aren’t necessarily ideal, let’s make the best of it.

Club Quarantine on Instagram hosts nightly Zoom parties, and many nonprofits like New Alternatives hosts fundraising livestreams to help homeless LGBTQ+ youth. There’s a plethora of virtual activities featuring some of our favorite celebs, and that’s one of the advantages of online Pride Month celebrations!
