Zayn Malik raises $11,000 for charity on birthday

One Direction fans have raised more than $11,000 for charity in honor of Zayn Malik's 22nd birthday.

Ardent followers of the British heartthrob launched an online fundraiser on JustGiving.com ahead of the Story of My Life hitmaker's birthday on Monday (12Jan15), calling on fellow fans to raise money for the British Asian Trust, an organization which helps communities of disadvantaged people in South Asia.

In lieu of real gifts, fans raised more than $11,000 for the charity, which Malik is an ambassador for, a total well over the initial goal of $10,000 .

The pop star took to Twitter.com to thank his fans for their generosity, posting a screenshot of the fundraising goal, and wrote the caption, "This is amazing thank you to Everyone involved!!"
