Sterling K. Brown had to deliver his first son
Actor Sterling K. Brown had to help deliver his first child at home when he and his wife were caught off guard.
The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story star and his wife, who are parents to two sons, thought they had plenty of time to get to the hospital when her contractions started - but their boy had other ideas.
"She had her first contraction at 11pm and Andrew, our first born,
came into the world at 2.23am the next day," he told Live! with
Kelly on Thursday (17Nov16). "Like three hours, 23 minutes...
"We're talking to our doula (pregnancy support expert) and she's
like, 'Relax, have a glass of wine, it's going to be a big day
tomorrow for you mommy', so she's trying to, like, take a shower,
lay down and then she's like, 'I gotta go to the bathroom'.
"That happens, like, three or four times, that's a bad sign. And we
were so trained, we went to, like, the birth class and everything
and the people told us even if the mucus membrane breaks that
doesn't mean anything. So I saw the membrane going down her leg,
'I'm like, 'Oh yeah, that's your plug, you'll be fine'."
But when Sterling and his wife realized the baby was on his way, it
was too late to make it to the hospital.
"She comes crawling out of the bathroom after a while and she says,
'I think I'm crowning...', and I say, 'Sweetheart, you can't be
crowning, it's your first baby, just try to relax...'" he said.
"She dials 911 and I'm on the phone with the midwife and every time
I'm on the phone with the midwife, my wife has... a contraction and
(starts yelling)," he added. "I'm like, 'Sweetheart, I can't hear
the midwife'.
"She's on all fours, the baby's head is out and the midwife is
like, 'That's fantastic, just wait for mommy to push again, catch
the baby so you can put him on mommy's chest and they can start
bonding'. Sure enough my wife pushed a second time, his body just
wriggled out. I had a hand on the back of his head and his bum. He
cried immediately, so I didn't have to rub him make sure he was
breathing... Then within seconds he's bobbing around looking for
mommy's breast."
