Sam Claflin's surprise over Hunger Games role

Written by . Published: October 08 2013

Sam Claflin was left shocked when he was recruited to take on the role of Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games sequel, as he did not feel hunky enough for the part.

The star, who met with criticism when he was cast as the fictional character in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, reveals he had no confidence in gaining the role during auditions because he did not resemble the musclebound character.

Claflin tells Britain's Elle magazine, "I saw people's reactions and some were harsh. Not to the point where I'm going to kill myself but I thought, 'I'm sorry I'm not your Finnick. Trust me, when I read the book, I didn't see me as Finnick either.

"I don't think I'm that attractive. I remember sitting waiting for the audition, reading the breakdown of the character: 6ft, tanned, toned. I felt very out of shape, I had stubble, long brown hair and was very pale.

"This other kid walked in who looked like Brad Pitt in Thelma + Louise, (he had) the muscles, blond hair, a vest. I thought, 'I am not going to get this part.'"

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is due for release later this year (13).
