M.I.A. lashes out at MTV bosses following Video Music Awards 'snub'
Provocative hip-hop star M.I.A. has blasted MTV Video Music Awards bosses for failing to nominate her Borders video.
The Paper Planes hitmaker took to Twitter a day after the nominations were revealed, and made her feelings clear.
"MIA - BORDERS is not included in the VMAs #hahahahhaahahhaha!!,"
she wrote, adding the snub smacks of: "Racism sexism classism
elitism...
"This is a perfect example of 'allowed' voice vs excluded voices.
Even if U direct it... not here 4 EGO or Accolades but know before
you tell other artists they have the same platform as major US
artists coz they don't (sic)."
The promo features the Sri Lankan rapper and a group of refugees
attempting to find a new home.
Her provocative lyrics include the lines: "Politics/What's up with
that?/Police shots/What's up with that?/Identities/What's up with
that?/Your privilege/What's up with that?/Broke people/What's up
with that?/Boat people/What's up with that?"
M.I.A's latest tweet comes weeks after she was dropped from the
bill of the Afropunk London festival. She claimed she was dumped
for comments she made about the Black Lives Matter movement.
In April (16), she told ES Magazine, "It's interesting that in
America the problem you're allowed to talk about is Black Lives
Matter. Is Beyonce or Kendrick Lamar going to say Muslim Lives
Matter? Or Syrian Lives Matter? Or this kid in Pakistan matters?
That's a more interesting question."
She took to social media following the publication of the article
to assure fans she wasn't attacking the Black Lives Matter
movement.
