Kelly Rowland wanted family like The Cosby Show

Kelly Rowland craved a normal family upbringing when she was younger after watching The Cosby Show.

The former Destiny's Child star has not seen her dad Christopher since she was a child, and has previously claimed his "drunk and aggressive" behaviour prompted her mother to leave him.

She also experienced a rift with her mother Doris, and Rowland admits she wanted nothing more than to be part of a traditional family unit - like on her favourite TV show.

She tells Britain's Cosmopolitan magazine, "Me and my mum didn't see eye to eye for a while. I would see how close my girlfriends were to their mothers and it bothered me.

"I haven't seen my dad for almost 20 years. It's nothing I want a pity party for. He left me and my mum, and I was angry. I wanted to be a daddy's girl so bad. God damn The Cosby Show because that made me think, 'Why aren't my family like that?'"

Rowland recently revealed she's open to speaking to her dad again in the future, and her experiences have made her determined to provide a father figure for her own children.

She adds, "More than anything it's taught me to provide my future children with a great father, and make sure I make the right decision when it comes to men."
