Jennifer Lawrence told boyfriend Darren Aronofsky he had 'severe psychological problems'
Jennifer Lawrence told director boyfriend Darren Aronofsky he had "severe psychological problems" after reading the script for Mother!.
The 27-year-old actress stars in the new horror thriller helmed by her off-screen beau, which tells the tale of a couple whose world is turned upside down following the arrival of some mysterious guests. While the film is already being praised for pushing boundaries, its twist has been kept tightly under wraps, but Jennifer revealed she was stunned when her 48-year-old partner told her of the premise.
“It was an instant yes before I even read anything," she said at a press conference for the film at the Toronto International Film Festival. "He told me his ideas and I thought they were brilliant and unique and challenging. I’ve been a fan of his for years - I think he’s bold and brave, and I think I said brilliant.
"But I’ve been a fan, so once he told me the ideas floating around in his head I said yes. Then I got a script and when I read it I threw it across the room and told him he had severe psychological problems. But it’s a masterpiece."
Regardless of whether or not viewers enjoy the film, one thing that they agree on is its ability to shock. And the polarizing reactions to the movie is something that Jennifer is thoroughly enjoying witnessing.
"We knew it was going to be polarizing, it’s just hilarious to see the people who love it, love it, and they think it’s amazing and they get it and then the people who don’t like it, absolutely despise it – there’s no in between," she told the Press Association.
Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris star as the outsiders in the film, and the actor added to the outlet it was Darren's story that attracted him to the project.
Revealing his thoughts after being asked by the Black Swan filmmaker to join the cast, Ed said: "What the hell, man. You’re a wonderful film-maker and a visionary of sorts so I’ll go on this ride with you."
