Soul star Janelle Monae was the toast of the Grammy organisation on Wednesday (16Jul14) when she was presented with a top prize for her arts education support.

First Lady Michelle Obama introduced the eclectic singer to the stage at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, where she praised Monae for making "music that means something".

She added, "She has a message. She has a voice. She has a power in her. And she understands the responsibility she has within her grasp to take these opportunities and just take off with them. She serves as a role model and an inspiration to so many young people. And I am happy to call her my friend. I am so proud of her."

Monae was then presented with The Jane Ortner Artist Award by National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences President Neil Portnow.

The honour is presented to an artist who "embodies the Grammy Museum's educational mission and shows passion and dedication to education through the arts".
