Drake sued over use of jazz musician's lyrics
Written by . Published: April 17 2014
Drake has become the latest rapper to find himself at the center of a plagiarism lawsuit - the administrators of a dead jazz musician's estate have accused him of sampling a monologue from a 1982 song without permission.
Jimmy Smith's relatives claim Drake stole the lyrics from Jimmy Smith Rap for his Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2 track - and then suggested the sample had been properly licensed on the liner notes.
According to a new lawsuit, obtained by TMZ.com, Drake never got
permission to use the 35-second monologue, recorded by Smith over
30 years ago.
His estate administrators are suing Drake and Cash Money Records,
among others, demanding more than $300,000 (GBP187,500).
