Shakira has been thanked by President Barack Obama for joining his committee to provide the best education for Hispanics living in America.

The Colombian She Wolf hitmaker has long been involved with educational issues in her homeland through her Barefoot Foundation, and has ensured students in Haiti and South Africa have access to nutritious meals as well as educational and psychological support services.

And her work with children has caught the eye of the leader, who has made her a member of his Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

Others joining Shakira include community activist Adrian Pedroza and Arizona's School District Superintendent Kent P. Scribner.

And the president has praised the singer and her fellow committee members for agreeing to advise the government on ways to improve educational opportunities and performance among Hispanics.

Obama says, "I am grateful that these impressive individuals have chosen to dedicate their talents to serving the American people at this important time for our country. I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead."
