Avril Lavigne: 'Journey to Lyme disease diagnosis was the worst time of my life'
Singer Avril Lavigne fought back tears as she recalled her recent battle with Lyme disease in a TV interview.
The Complicated hitmaker was eventually diagnosed with the bacterial infection last year (14), but she knew something was seriously wrong with her health after experiencing two months of symptoms - even though doctors could not pinpoint what was wrong with her.
In an emotional interview with show Good Morning America, she says,
"I literally became bedridden last October. I was in Los Angeles
and it was literally the worst time of my life.
"I was seeing every specialist and literally the top doctors and
they would just... pull up their computer and be like, 'Chronic
fatigue syndrome...' or, 'Why don't you try to get out of bed
Avril, and just go play the piano.' It was like, 'Are you
depressed?' This is what they do to a lot of people that have Lyme
disease (because) they don't have an answer for them, so they tell
them, like, 'You're crazy'."
Lavigne finally took her health into her own hands and found a
doctor specialising in treating Lyme disease.
She continues, "The thing is when you're a specialist you also
really know the disease inside and out and you can diagnose through
symptoms."
The rocker is halfway through her treatment, but she is determined
to make a full recovery, adding, "There is hope... and you can get
better. I think, for me, it's like a second shot at life. I want to
go out there and truly do what I love. So I'm so excited for life
after this."
